Hi,
anyone has tried an X1 with a SSD OCZ Vertex 4?

- ThinkPad X1 Type 1291-27U

Thanks
Oliver

I just noted that the SSD of the X1 is too slim, its a Intel 320. Need to find a slim SSD, anyone can recommend one?

Oliver

The Samsung 830/840 might be worth a look.

Maybe one option is to buy an ocz or crucial and disassemble it in order to fit.

That of course may have ramifications for your warranty. I'd say if you can get the Samsung close in price to the others, it doesn't need modification to fit.

I checked the Amazon Best Sellers list and Samsung is indeed one of the cheapest, but I have a special feeling regarding Samsung and they policies.

I was just about the buy the Samsung when I found this Crucial, 7mm thick, 256G at 200 US$, Crucial M4:

If someone is looking, here is the Amazon Best Sellers SSD:

Did you end up buying the Crucial 256GB and did it fit without problems?

Is the Samsung 840 (eg. 500GB model) known to fit and work in the X1 Carbon? If so, how is the performance compared to the Intel?

Thanks,

Dominique

It does not. The X1 Carbon is an Ultrabook. To get them thin they use specialized parts. I believe you can swap the drive for a larger one, up to 256GB, but the SSD is not a CRU, meaning doing so will have consequences for your warranty.

I couldn't wait for a 7mm SSD to come in the mail. My X1 came with a 320 HDD, so you can imagine my angst at having to deal with "the slowest computer in the world." I had a few SSDs in my MacPro, so I took my OCZ Vertex 3 out of its enclosure, placed it in the X1's 7mm hard drive caddy (which is very well-insulated), held it with some transparent packing tape at the top, and it has been going [lightning fast] for a little over a year now.

What I'm trying to say: the whole 7mm thing is a hoax to create an artificial demand for "low profile" drives over the regular SSDs.

That said, if I were going for something today, the most impressive SSD out there (to me, of course) is the 110x or x110 from Sandisk. It's also very well-priced.

You previously wrote: "The Samsung 830/840 might be worth a look.", from which I inferred it would work in the X1 (I do understand this would waive the warranty). Do you mean only some 830/840 models work, for instance the 256GB model, but not the 500GB one?

Just to make sure: you are talking about the original X1, not the X1 Carbon, right? The form factor is different, so what applies to the X1 won't necessarily apply to the X1 Carbon.

The X1 and X1 Carbon are different notebooks. The X1 uses a 2.5" hard drive that is a CRU, customer replaceable unit. The X1 Carbon uses a different form factor SSD that is not a standard 2.5" drive like the X1 nor is it a CRU, meaning upgrading it will void the warranty because you've got to take apart the X1C to do so. I believe the SSD on the X1C can be swapped and if you do it right Lenovo may never know, but if they want to make an issue of it they can because you've taken apart the machine, which is a violation of the terms of the warranty.

To domi:

Of course. The X1c would have made the entire task described impossible.

This. I just took the bottom portion of the casing off my SANDisk to get it to fit. The top portion coupled with the hard drive sled protects the important bits. Been running like this for about a year with nary a problem. YMMV however and this of course voids the warranty.

I just wanted to confirm that the Crucial M4 7mm version works fine, and fit well inside the X1(not carbon model). I got 300Mbyte/s in hdtune, hope to post the screenshot in 2 weeks
