1080p display on future X1 Carbon?

#1 Post by domi » Sat May 18, 2013 12:44 pm

Hi!

Several 13" ultrabooks (eg. from Asus and Samsung) feature 1920 x 1080 displays. Any idea whether the next iteration of X1 Carbon will follow suit?

Thanks,

Dominique

Strangely, 14.*-inch is the only screen size that hasn't had 1920x1080 resolution yet. 1080p can be found on 10.*, 11.*, 12.*, 13.*, 15.*, 16.*, 17.* and 18.*-inch screens, but not on 14.*-inch ones. This is stupid, because 1920x1080 is too high for screens under 14.0", and too low for those larger than 14.9".

That's debatable. I wouldn't want 1080p on a 15" LCD and that's been my experience with others, though I would agree, some do like it.

After i saw the XPS 13 Ultrabook with FHD IPS LCD, i got to say that the X1C 14 inch HD+ TN LCD is just ordinary by comparison.

There aren't 1080p 15.0" panels that I know of, so I was really referring to 15.5" (of some Sony laptops) and 15.6". 1080p on 15.0" would actually be nearly perfect -- hopefully Samsung's 15.0" Series 9 will soon offer that. I think 1080p is still okay on 15.5" or 15.6" but 2048x1152 would be even nicer for these sizes.

I don't think anyone would deny that lower pixel densities make things easier to see/read. However, when we are traveling with just one laptop (rather than using a desktop with multiple huge monitors), we need to balance between viewing comfort, mobility, and productivity, thus forcing us to make certain compromises. Some people are willing to sacrifice viewing comfort to some extent to enhance productivity on the road (i.e. those of us who want 1366x768 on 10.1", or 1600x900 on 12.5", or 1920x1080 on 14.*), while others would rather have large text -- these people would need to either get bigger laptops (i.e. sacrifice mobility), or get small laptops that require more scrolling (i.e. sacrifice productivity). For me, the most ideal laptop that's currently available is Samsung's 2.58lb Samsung 9 with 13.3" 1920x1080. I know things would be a bit difficult to see, but that's a sacrifice I am willing to make. This laptop would replace both my Dell Latitude E4200 (2.23 lbs, 12.1" 1280x800) and Panasonic CF-Y7 (3.34 lbs, 14.1" 1400x1050). I wouldn't want to use 13.3" 1920x1080 on a daily basis, but using it occasionally is fine.

It's really not so unreasonable to ask for 1080p on the X1 Carbon's 14.0" screen. Dell's Latitude C610 and Inspiron 4100 had 14.1" 1600x1200 11 years ago, and 1080p is now available for 10.6" (of Microsoft's Surface Pro) to 13.3" screens. And as I said before, it's not like we're asking governments to outlaw 1366x768 or 1600x900. We just want one more option, 1920x1080, and those of you who prefer 1366x768 or 1600x900 would continue to have these.
