I love the X1C
I've been waiting for a 15" PC laptop that is really thin and has 8 GB ram.
But X1C would do even with 14" since I saw it yesterday and it seems wide enough.

But the space ?!
After installing all my Dev tools, images, etc.
I'm worried if I'm going to have any space left ! I so wished they had a model or SDD + HDD !!

So I need help on two things :
1.) What can one do to make X1 workable from a space perspective.
2.) What other model can come close to X1's thin form factor but is atleast 14" and has ample space.



P.S : I currently have a T510, but it's way too heavy and frankly X1C is just so beautiful, it justifies changing a laptop after 3 years..

You could take a Windows disc to it for a clean install and leave off anything you don't want. Disabling System Restore and Rescue and Recovery usually frees up a good chunk of space. There's a 256GB option, though it is considerably more expensive. I believe Asus and Samsung make some 15" Ultrabooks, but have hefty price tags too.

You could look at the T430s. It's only about a pound heavier than the X1 Carbon, but would allow you to do a SSD + HDD.

I never use Hibernation and so I always turn it off. For a computer with 8GB of RAM, turning off Hibernation would free up 8GB of SSD/HDD storage. Also, I always manually set the maximum and minimum virtual memories to be identical, and on nearly all computers I've used, I set these to be smaller than the automatic settings, allowing me to gain a little more storage space. Another thing you may want to consider is deleting the hidden partition AFTER burning a set of recovery discs. For the old Thinkpads I used to have, doing this would free up 4 - 6 GB. You may also want to check whether Windows has temporary system files (e.g. Windows installation files) that are safe to delete.

The thinnest and lightest 15.* inch laptops currently available are:

Samsung Series 9, 15.0" 1600x900, 3.51 lbs
Vizio CT15, 15.6" 1920x1080, 3.96 lbs

Two other fairly light 15.* inch laptops that aren't particularly thin but have 1080p resolution:

Panasonic Let's Note CF-B11, 15.6" 1920x1080, 4.18 lbs
Sony S Series 15, 15.5" 1920x1080, 4.42 lbs

After these, there are quite a few 15-inchers between ~4.6 and 4.99 lbs, by Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo, but these are probably too heavy for you.

BTW, Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina has 15.4" 2880x1800 and weighs 4.46 lbs.

I'm going to check Asus. It's thin form factor is certainly attractive.
The UX52VS seems like an SSD+HDD that sounds promising.

Also the UX51VZ seems good - about 400GB free space - but quite pricey.. !

If your 5.7-lb T510 is "way too heavy", you might still find the 4.84-lb UX52VS a bit too much.

True. Also, I learned that the 52VS isn't touch

The odd thing is there is no detailed review I could find for it.
Or the price !

I also wrote down what I wanted to help me in narrowing the criteria :

• Minimum 14"
  Windows 8
  Touchscreen
  RAM = 8GB
  Hard disk should have at-least 400 GB free to use
  SDD required. Hybrid (SDD+HDD) is fine too.
  Should be thin - no CD drive

See these aren't out of the world demands !
Now only if a manufacturer makes a PC of this sort !!

If you wanted to step back a few generations, the T410s came with a multitouch display, 14", room for 2 hdds (with ultrabay swapped), and was pretty thin (back then).

You could consider high capacity high speed SDXC cards perhaps?
They're coming down quite a bit in price, and your Thinkpad would still be shockproof.

you can install half-size msata ssd after removing WWAN card. ( The little mofication is required to install msata ssd on mini pci express slot)

There are dual ssd ( x1 original ssd+ half size msata ssd ) on my x1 carbon.

Can you elaborate on what modification is required, and which half-sized mSATA SSD you used in your Carbon?
