Hi all,
I have a faithful old T410s which had taken to freezing roughly every two hours. Almost certainly a heat problem but it's probably time for a replacement anyway.
Tempted by the 2014 Carbon. But I'm hesitating over the power and things like the 8MB Ram limit which seemed plenty 4 years ago on my 410s but now feels a bit limited.
This will be my main work machine on which I will want to do some programming, run a virtual machine occasionally but also do a little amateur film editing and music (cubase).
Does anyone have an opinion on whether I should stick to a more traditional work horse like the 440s or whether ultra-portables are now ready for this level of work?
Many thanks

Re: Thinkpad X1 carbon 2014 vs T440s
Hi,
I am in the same shoes. I have a X1C with 4GB bought almost 2 years ago, but now seems slow while browsing online or when Visual Studio and other apps are running.
I was also debating about getting the new X1C with 8GB, but then there is no more expansion.
IMHO, T440s is a better choice because of the following:
1. more memory: 4GB base soldered + 8GB user replaceable
I asked Lenovo rep whether a base 8GB would be available in the future (as in T440 & T440p), but they have no answer.
2. HD: SSDs are expensive and 128GB quickly runs out of space (at least for me). I would prefer traditional 500Gb HD with 16GB micro drive as data buffer
3. One extra USB port (total 3). I constantly connect an external HD for stored data. But I also use my phone via PDANet / USB for internet connection and USB mouse, so I have to, at times switch.
I am not sure whether I would ever use the battery swap feature, but it is there.
Hope this helps.

The clickpads aren't great on either, but the X1C's is (IMHO) much more tolerable due to the reduced travel.
Just something to consider...
