How can I boot Lenovo x1 carbon 2014 from an USB thumb drive?
It has Windows 8.1. And I have tried
1. Disable Secure Boot in the BIOS setting
2. I create the the bootable usB drive using Windwos 7 USB/DVD download too.
3. Change the boot order to have the usb drive as #1.

but when I boot my laptop up? it does not boot from the usb drive.
It always goes back to windows 8.1.
Does anyone know how to get lenovo carbon x1 to boot from usb drive?

Also test booting the flash drive in other systems.

I have tested the boot drive on my older laptop which has Windows 7. It can boot up to the USB drive.
Some how when I put that on my X1 Carbon, it does not boot.

Using a USB 3.0 port or USB 2.0? USB 3.0 ports could be a problem since Windows 7 doesn't have USB 3.0 drivers built-in.

I this it is a usb 2.0 port. The port on the right side of the laptop. (not the same USB port i used for the charger).

Unfortunately I think both ports might be 3.0 .

But when I boot to windows 8.1 and insert my usb thumbdrive, it can read the content of that drive.

jdrou is right, both USB ports are 3.0.
However, you must change the Startup boot-sequence in that cranky UEFI BIOS properly for it to work.
A USB port shows in BIOS as
USB HDD.
You also need to change UEFI/Legacy boot to Legacy and have Legacy First in the Priority.
Darn UEFI!
