Can I make an external USB SSD boot drive?

Hey,

I've got this X1/20A7 that I want to install Linux on but I also need
access to W7P and would like to have the whole thing on an external
USB drive (AngelBird SSD2Go/128GB).

I can't make out if the Lenovo installation disks allow you to select an
external drive to install the drivers and OS but I've read that W7P isn't
external drive friendly but it is not impossible with the right tweaking
software.

However, I was considering the option of an M2.NGFF to USB adaptor
to fool the system into thinking that the external USB drive was the
internal drive.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA.

Windows will only boot on a removable drive (USB) if it is installed using Windows-To-Go.

Taking a Windows 7 install and trying to boot it off USB will not work.

Edit: I should have noted I actually tried to take the drive from internal and boot off external through a USB setup. It would restart the system on the initial startup screen.
