Feature Request: X1 Carbon Generaation 3 (2015) support for NVMe SSD

#1 Post by w0qj » Tue Jun 16, 2015 9:31 pm

Please see:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sam ... ,4137.html

In the Conclusion section, the reviewer stated that the new "NVMe" version of Samsung SM951 (NVMe version) *DOES*NOT* boot up in the X1 Carbon Generation 3 (2015 version).

I really wish that future X1 BIOS update would allow for NVMe SSD suuport !
(Pease count this as a Feature Request !)

OMG - but wait, the X1 Carbon (2015) does *NOT* use a SATA interface, does it? I'm quite clear I read benchmarks showing ~1400MB/sec throughput, whereas SATA 3's upper practical limit is ~600MB/sec, no?

Kindly correct me :)

Who *exactly* is your "request" aimed at?

Sarbin had this machine for testing purposes and now I have it. There's benchmarks in the article about that drive.

I'm planning to upgrade a SSD in X1C 3rd Gen (currently has toshiba thnsfj256gdnu - sata) with a ~500+gb ssd drive, preferably a PCIe one
and I'm not entirely sure which ones will boot/work

a) does anyone have any experience please if Samsung SM951 PCIe NVMe works?
(in contrast to the earlier post that it doesn't boot I found reference to several reviews that the ssd should work)
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... lit=x1+ssd

b) will any one sided 80mm m.2 ssd work? or can someone suggest a ssd that has been confirmed to work please?

Hi,
I've tried NVMe version and it did not work for me. I ended up using it on my desktop and getting the AHCI version for the x1 carbon.

I can confirm the SM951 AHCI version works.
