1st gen X1 carbon won't boot to windows 7 and no recovery partition

#1 Post by tdphatak » Mon Mar 14, 2016 9:32 pm

I apologize in advance for the following dumb question:

I've got an X1 carbon 1st gen with OEM Windows 7 that I deleted the recovery partition from (to claim the space). Now I cannot boot to Windows 7 normally (only safe mode works). How can I repair the Windows 7 install? I've got no disk or USB with Windows 7 on it.

Thanks in advance!

If you can get into safe mode, most likely you can fix it from safe mode without any external recovery environments.

It would help to know exactly what the issue is, and whether you did anything specific when it started to happen. There are thousands of possible causes to "won't boot".
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

This free download might work: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar ... d/windows7
After burning it onto a DVD, boot from it using an external drive, it'll ask for Language/Keyboard, then click on Next.
On the next page, select the Repair option.
The program will try to fix things automatically.
If it cannot do so immediately, it shows a list of options, select the Boot repair option.
That should do it.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
