The other day I needed to clone an mSATA SSD onto an original Intel SSD for X1C1.
I plugged an external SATA CD-drive with Acronis TrueImage in the right-hand USB-port (USB3.0).
The mSATA SSD was put on a 1.8" SATA-to-mSATA adapter (from an X301), and then this 1.8" SATA adapter was put into the 1.8" SATA-slot of a Sabrent USB-STP3 adapter.
This Sabrent adapter was then connected via USB into the left-hand USB-port (always ON).
Then I booted from the Acronis CD and tried to clone the mSATA onto the X1C-SSD inside the laptop.
Tried a few times, but Acronis kept telling me that I only had one drive, and for cloning they need two drives!

Then I tried it the other way around:
- CD-drive into the left-hand USB-port (always ON)
- external drive into the right-hand USB-port (USB3.0)
- booted Acronis from CD and now the cloning worked (less than 1/2 hour for ca. 60GB).

FYI: I was also missing some screws to put the X1C1 together again.
This requires 7 pcs. of M2 x 4mm.
As it turned out, the "big-headed" screws such as used in e.g. a T60/p to hold the keyboard-bezel/LCD-connector in place, are a perfect fit, just so you know.

I have one of those USB cradle SATA III drive duplicators. It's a push button cloning device. You put the master drive in the back slot and the drive to be cloned in the front slot. For whatever reason I cannot clone a smaller drive from a larger drive even if the smaller drive has enough storage space to cover the entire contents of the larger drive.

The X1C-Gen1 has a unique 20-6-pin connector that is not used anywhere else in the world.
So your duplicator will never work...
