Part of our company policy is we have to buy Lenovo for all employees. This has been good for many years. but in 2015 we bought one of the first X1 Carbon. This unit lost Graphics output, and according to Vietnam Lenovo, cannot be repaired, and we need to pay 75% of the value of a new X1 for changing the motherboard? can this really be correct?

X1 Carbon parts are expensive and hard to come by.
On eBay you are talking $600 and up for just a motherboard.
It may be cheaper to buy a used one with similar specs.
Search eBay with: lenovo x1 carbon 20a7
If you find one with a broken screen or other damage but still working, it's easy enough to swap the motherboard yourself.
But be careful and take your time, whoever does this!

Our company always max out the Warranty to 5 years, to make the best return on our Thinkpad investment over time.
Thinkpads are initially expensive, but they are built to last!

As for your observations, yes, X1 Carbon is very expensive to repair and even harder to upgrade.
If expensive repairs is your concern, suggest you consider the T460 and X260 series, which is much more user friendly.
