Windows 10 Creators breaks screen dimming and external displays

#1 Post by charlieo » Sun Apr 23, 2017 2:00 pm

Just wasted a ton of time on this.

Installed creators and immediately saw two problems. Solved one. Could do not solve other:
1. Screen Dimmer broke: The dimmer control would no longer dim. I could get full bright or min dim no matter where the control was placed. After many hours of trying different drivers, firmware, etc, finally had to revert to prior verion.

2. Initially, external monitors failed. Eventually solved that by reinstalling drivers. But given the first problem, it no longer mattered.

You may wish to avoid this update as I've found a fair number of display related issues with this release.

Many thank for your heads-up, much appreciated!

1. Which X1 Carbon Generation is your laptop?
(2nd generation? 3rd generation? 4th generation?)

2. We are sticking with Windows 7 until the year 2020 for almost all of our machines.

It is precisely teething problems after Win10 Windows Update like these that we are avoiding the Win10 like the plague.

FWIW, screen dimming and external display work fine on my X1C3 (WQHD touch display) on Creators. However, it was installed as a clean install, not an upgrade if that makes a difference. I do recall that immediately after installation, screen dimming behaved as you described. But after the system settled down and Windows Update installed the various required drivers (and following a reboot or two) it works perfectly.

i dont think you can avoid win10 updates ...
at least not big updates like this., smaller updates however could probably be blocked.

I had this exact issue with the last major update. It worked with a fresh install but not with an update. I think I'll be avoiding it for the time being...
