X1 Carbon Gen 2 keyboard lights flashing when turn on
X1 Carbon Gen 2 keyboard lights flashing when turn on
Hi,
I have X1 Carbon 20A7 OS Win 7.
When I press the power button the button light and the adaptive keys lights and the keyboard lights and the red dot light on the cover, they all flashing and every thing else is dead,
except the fan which work and stop in each flash,
which might suggest that the laptop is turn on and off in each flash.
The reset hole is the only thing that turn off the flashes.
Any idea about the reason or the solution?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Sorry for your trouble.
In my experience with this issue and this ThinkPad the only solution is to replace the mother board sorry to say.

Thanks brad for the quick reply.
It seems that it is the only solution to the problem.
I still wonder what was the reason,
because the day before it crash I made a few online updates suggested by Lenovo System Update, including BIOS update.
So, is it just a technical failure of the mother board
or something was wrong with the updates?

What I can say is that I have seem many X1 Carbon 2nd gen with the same issue.
I haven't known what happened just before the issue.
What I do know is that the original mother board part was replaced by Lenovo going back a year and a half or so and I have seen zero issues with these new part number mother boards. I have seen quite a number of them say upwards of 100.

Re: X1 Carbon Gen 2 keyboard lights flashing when turn on
Could you maybe tell us the number of the faulty motherboards we should avoid? Or the number of the new one without issues? I'm wondering if it's about FRU (like 00HN767) or the p/n (like 48.4LY06.021). I tried to figure it out from Lenovo's parts list.. But there was just zillions of FRU numbers in system board list. I guess it might be very helpful for many people trying to replace faulty with the right type.
Re: X1 Carbon Gen 2 keyboard lights flashing when turn on
In my experience any part number that begins with 00HN is suspect. The 00UP motherboards appear to have fixed the issue.

Re: X1 Carbon Gen 2 keyboard lights flashing when turn on
Okay, thank You very much! My laptop which i bought recently as "refurbished" doesn't seem to have anything refurbished at all. The charger was new.. And i did check the fru of the mobo and how ridiculous is that it actually the same number i did put in the question (randomly found on ebay) 00HN767!
Anyways i hate it for the delete in place of backspace. That is to me the worst part of this rearanged and hated by everyone keyboard so I'm not even regretting sending it back anymore. I think i'll go either with 3gen Carbon or something from X series since I'm used to 11 in tiny laptop (rocks in travel!). I honestly hope more people can see this because recently refurbished Carbons are flooding auction sites in many countries in Europe.

Re: X1 Carbon Gen 2 keyboard lights flashing when turn on
You are welcome.
Any X1 Carbon Gen 2 with the suspect FRU can fail in the fashion described so if anyone is looking at a X1 Carbon Gen 2 it is something to consider.
