A friend of mine has a X1 Carbon that makes an intermittent chirping sound. Pressing the "mute" button eliminates the chirping sound.

Most likely a software problem. Download and run malwarebytes. My computer used to do a similar thing.

I downloaded malwarebytes, and ran it. 61 threats were found, and quarranteened. Unfortunately, the intermittent chirp is still there

I'd try a live Linux distro just to see if the problem is software. If it is chirping in Windows but not Linux then a fresh Windows install might be on order. If both chirping is from both OS then it's hardware.

Windows rebuilds can give random error messages at inconvenient times

.
Why not use a Linux Live CD and test it that way?
