X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
Hi all,
I've been lurking here for sometime but thought I'd join and say hi and ask a quick question.
I seem to have a problem where my collection of ThinkPad's continue to grow... X201, X230, T420, 2X T440P (1 work issued, 1 personal) all with plenty of RAM and SSD's. They all seem to serve a purpose and are routinely used.
I don't really NEED anymore but came across a local classified, price is firm at $280 CDN (213 USD, 182 EUR) cash, no taxes.
Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2013 (i7 4600U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) - good battery and seller is original owner
The X Carbon models are not something I'm familiar with. We don't use them at work and I've never paid much attention to them. The price is what caught my eye as I believe it to be a good deal? The 2013's are the first gen of the X series? Anything I should be aware of on this model or to check for? I'll get to see it in person before purchase.
Thanks in advance!

They are very nice machines (I have one), except
- they have one big but: their Lenovo-proprietary SSF type SSD (no one else has it)
- they have one smaller but: only soldered RAM (which is getting common nowadays )
If you can live with that, why not?

Re: X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
Translated into Swiss francs that's an excellent price! I don't know how is it in Canada, but here 2nd hand X1 Carbon's are rare to find for a price like that.
I have one with 8GB, 256GB SSD and a modded FHD panel. As a traveling companion is an excellent machine! Light and yet sturdy, the specs are more than enough for common tasks I'd say (browsing, office, email, movie watching).
The first gen of the X1 Carbon series, there is also the "plain" X1, which is even more rare... It uses a standard 2.5" drive and has only one slot of RAM available, (max 1x 8GB). And it has a rather awful 1366x768 screen...

Re: X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
Oh shoot, I did not realize this generation took a proprietary SSD. I've already agreed to take it and the 256GB is sufficient space for what I'll be using it for. For the price I'm paying I'm sure I'll be happy. I guess i'll only have to worry if it ever dies on me. I was just quickly looking and see a post on lenovo forums where someone mentioned these adapters so standard M.2 drives can be used? That seems like a handy thing to keep around if they are cheap enough in case I ever find myself replacing the drive.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Thu Jul 05, 2018 7:36 amThey are very nice machines (I have one), except

Re: X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
I would appreciate if someone more knowledgeable than myself can confirm this is would work with a X1 Carbon, first gen to allow for a standard M.2 SSD to be used?

Those adapters do indeed work, but they are about 1mm too high/thick to properly fit.
They look like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/261773739647
The Chinese used to make such adapters with soldered-in instead of plugged-in mSATA SSD. They DID fit.
I haven't seen those in a while now.

Re: X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
No. The 2012 X1C is the first X1C. The 2013 is the 2nd gen with the nasty keyboard and clickpad and touchbar. The standard X1 came out in 2011 and is the successor to the X301 and the spiritual successor of a BestBuy laptop.Tasurinchi wrote: ↑Thu Jul 05, 2018 7:53 amThe first gen of the X1 Carbon series, there is also the "plain" X1, which is even more rare... Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Re: X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
If that is the case it appears second gen has a standard M. 2 slot from what I'm reading. That would be much better as I've got spares around if ever needed. I've got no need to upgrade it for now and not sure I'll be keeping to reselling this one yet but good to know. Thanks!

X1C2 has this horrible touchbar/F-key concoction.
Do not fall in that trap!

The only positive aspect of that infamous X1C is the WQHD screen and the standard M.2 slot...

Re: X1 2013 pricing and what to look for?
Well still ended up getting it, couldn't pass the $280 CDN deal. The thing is in great condition. It has a Samsung SSD and crystal disk is only reporting 760 power on with 8000 something hours. He even brought it in a very nice leather messenger bag that he gave to me along with it. The SSD and bag alone are worth half of what I paid so really couldn't be happier.
Lenovo sure made some questionable choices on the keyboard and not sure what to think about the touch bar but I'm also not absolutely hating it. Wouldn't want it as my primary work keyboard but this laptop will likely just be used for surfing and media consumption on the go, hell the battery is even showing ~7hours still remaining.

We all thought you were talking about an X1C1, but it sounds like you got an X1C2...
