Connecting headphones through Thunderbolt 3

#1 Post by szostakowicz » Fri Sep 28, 2018 7:20 am

I tried to connect my headphones (no mic) to Thinpad X1 Carbon 6 through a dongle. It has a regular headphone jack input for headphones and usb-c output. I think it's usually used for phones that don't have a headphone jack.
That setup, however, doesn't work. Is there a way to use thunderbolt 3 as a means of connecting headphones?

(The reason I ask is that the headphone jack on X1 Carbon 6 makes strange (static?) noises all the freaking time. BIOS update did not help, it's probably a hardware issue.)

Try this useful article:

Bring back the headphone jack: Why USB-C audio still doesn't work

The gist of it is that some USB-C dongles contain a DAC, and some don't.

If you're asking what is a DAC, then USB-C to 3.5mm jack for audio listening probably is not for you!
