X1 Carbon (7th Generation) Introduction--a 14" X1C7 (circa Summer 2019)

www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X ... 286.0.html

~ThinkPad said this X1C7 would be launched in Summer 2019 (!)
~Brighter LCD option
~Visible Carbon Fiber coating for LCD lid
~Dolby-Atmos-branded speakers + two downward-firing speakers are two subwoofers.

I for one is not that happy about a smaller battery (51 Wh for X1C7, vs 57 Wh for X1C6) to make room for the two subwoofers in X1C7.

I personally "mute" my computer 95% of the time, as it is a work computer, so subwoofers are not needed.
But I do NEED a battery that is as large as possible, since one cannot swap the X1C7 internal battery.

What are your thoughts on decreased battery size?

Anyways, since it's summer 2019 launch for this X1C7, hope that ThinkPad will reconsider this battery size matter...

[Edit: OK, to put this into perspective, my current X1C4 comes with 52 Wh battery, basically same as the proposed X1C7.
But I would much prefer a +10% larger battery over subwoofers!]

The X1C7 with the carbon fiber weave will look great with my Pagani Huayra. :)

Jokes aside this is an interesting step that Lenovo is taking with the X1C, they are adding subwoofers to them, making it more HiFi.
Really whats the point of having a HDR compliant display if your audio sounds like meh without headphones?
Perhaps this will be the start of the X1C's evolution, becoming more of a multimedia ultrabook device than just purely business lightweight.
The carbon fiber weave will definitely be an attractive option for some, I for example had wrapped a few ugly ThinkPad lids with a carbon fiber vinyl.
So if I were to get one of these, it would definitely have that...
Wish it would have 3:2 display, but we know most consumers hate seeing black bars on their screen when watching video, hopefully the X1 Tablet will have the CF weave.

Makes me wonder if they'll add subwoofers to T490s? Maybe T481s?

What's the difference between the new and old speakers? Oh I know! A Dolby sticker and a 50$ price jump!
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Hi All,

Where can I find a comprehensive comparison of Gen7 vs Gen6 in a table form and not in a long review text? I'm due a company laptop refresh in June and am deciding whether to wait for a Gen7 one or rather go for a Gen6 one. Smaller battery is an obvious disadvantage of Gen7 vs Gen6 for me, so unless Gen7 is so much better at other things that matter perhaps I'll rather go for a Gen6 one.

Many thanks in anticipation!

There's a summary chart of X1C7 (7th Gen, circa Summer 2019):
www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_proces ... 809f72.jpg
www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X ... 286.0.html

But I struggle to find a similar summary chart for X1C6...can anyone help?

Thanks for your replies. So 6th Gen looks better to me so far: up to 19hrs battery life vs up to 15hrs for 7th Gen; no change around the ports if I got it right; 6th Gen display brightness is good enough (many colleagues of mine have it); no need in HQ audio on the laptop as that's what my separate audio components are for. I'll then try asking for laptop refresh sooner rather than later while the 6th Gen ones last.

Btw what is this new chassis really about (wrt the 7th Gen)?

"For the first time since 2017, Lenovo introduces a new chassis to its high-end ultraportable line. This enables various changes that weren't have been possible with a simple platform-update. "
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Th ... 286.0.html

Are they talking just about physical layout of its internals?

Redesigned X1C7 chasis: I'm guessing that for ThinkPad:
~had to shoehorn subwoofers into the small X1C7 chasis
~had to make battery ~10% smaller, again due to the subwoofers

Not sure what docking station solution ThinkPad propose us to use for X1C7.
Hopefully the X1C6 docking solution can be re-used for X1C7, so that different ThinkPad models can share same docking solution, to help save overall ThinkPad fleet ownership costs.

I miss the days then ThinkPad docking solutions are designed to work with 2-3 ThinkPad generations.
For example, my ThinkPad Port Replicator Series 3 worked with three (3) generations of ThinkPads in both T and X series (T410 and X230 in our case).

There is nothing to miss; these days never ended. The Basic/Pro/Ultra Docks (40A0/40A1/40A2) have worked with both T and X series between **40 and **70. That's 4 generations. I would expect that the new mechanical docks similarly last for at least a couple of generations. And then there are of course the USB-C/Thunderbolt docks, which are even more compatible.

Well at least their ports on the LH side look no different.

Anyway I ended up ordering a 6th Gen one: larger battery was the winner.

OK, I stand corrected... noted that T-series and X-series docking solutions worked for 4 generations ;)
[Edit: Stops at four (4) generations)]

All I can say is that we've been using X1 Carbon (Gen 3 & Gen 4), and docking solutions were different for each generation.
We refused to procure docking solutions, as these cannot be shared between models purchased reasonably closely together.

Yes, Carbon and Yoga models have always been problematic in this regard.

The revolution of the side dock connector on **80 series and up makes the X1 Carbon compatible with mechanical docks for the first time. Of course, it makes the new docks not compatible with older **70 models. So it stops at 4 generations.

Lenovo, can we PLEASE have 32GB RAM option in this model? Since X390 is going to have it, I'd assume it would make sense to include it in X1 Carbon as well?

The X1 Carbon (7th Generation), aka X1C7, is now out!

It comes with choice of either 8 GB RAM or 16 GB RAM, and it's most likely to be soldered in and not user replaceable.
Better to get the 16 GB RAM, me thinks ;)
