M.2 SSD adapter for X1C1

#1 Post by Fasta » Thu Feb 07, 2019 8:01 am

Hello everyone, I'm new in the forum, freshly registered from Lisbon, Portugal.
I have a question for you ThinkPad experts.

I love my old X1C1, and there's no way I will change it with a newer ultrabook, mainly due to affection but also because I don't see a good replacement at any reasonable price.
Besides, everything still work amazingly, so why changing? :D 8)

There's only one little problem, I got short on the SSD storage.
I took advantage of an SSD drive sale to get myself a M.2 500 Gb 2280 drive.

Problem is, X1C1 has a proprietary socket

I saw a few adapters around at a reasonable price, such as this one:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/CY-Mini ... 34347.html
or this one:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/M-2-NGF ... 52305.html

Now, these adapters seem to support up to 2242 standard, but I guess the only limitation with a 2280 drive is the space.
Does anyone know if a ribbon cable-like adapter like those exist?
That would overcome the space limitation, allowing the drive to be placed in any other empty space under the keyboard.
Has anyone tried such modification?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The problem with any of those (Aliexpress or other) adapters is their thickness.
They fit in the SSD space of your X1C1, but the keyboard does no longer fit properly above it, because the black M.2 connector is too high/thick.
The only non-original I have ever come across, that fits in the X1C1 looks like this:
It's an mSATA SSD soldered onto an adapter-board without the black M.2 connector housing.

If you want to use that 2280 drive, I'm afraid you'll have to invent an adapter (or cable) yourself.
See if you can find schematics for the X1C1, there is one named: Lenovo_X1_Carbon_wistron_genesis-1_lgs-1_11246-sc.pdf
But also try: wistron_genesis-1_lgs-1_11246-sc.pdf and/or lgs-1_11246-sc.pdf

I don't think 2280 drive will fit anywhere inside X1C1...

Those NGFF adapters are too thick and will create bulge on the keyboard. I resolved that issue by creating some kind
of hybrid of parts of two of those adapters cut then soldered and glued together one over (under) the other. Now it will
fit in X1C1 just fine. I am using cheap no name Chinese 2242 SSD without any issue.
