A warm welcome to the ThinkPads Forum!

0. Ensure that your USB 3.0 external hard drive have been properly formatted so that different computers can "see" it?
If your external hard drive can be opened, and while unconnected and by itself, take out the hard drive, and then re-insert hard drive back into your external hard drive enclosure.

1. There are two (2) USB 3.0 slots on your X1C6 (X1 Carbon 6th Gen).
So did you try to insert it into both USB 3.0 slots (one on your left side, one on your right side) to see if it works?

2. If above (1) does not work, do you have another computer that you can try out your USB 3.0 external hard disk upon?
(And try all the different USB 3.0 slots while you are at it).

If above (1) does not work, and (2) also does not work, then perhaps your USB 3.0 external hard disk is broken?

If above (1) does not work, and (2) *WORKS*, then perhaps your X1 Carbon 6th Gen USB ports are broken?

Thank you for your reply,

0. I think the USB 3.0 external hard drive is properly formatted. I am not sure if I can take it of from its enclosure.

1. Yes i have tried both USB 3.0 slots, and the external hard drive is not detected.

2. Yes I can open the external hard drive in another laptop without any problem.

----------
So my USB 3.0 external hard drive is not broken

When i connect my 2.0 USB in both slots it works perfectly, so maybe the slots are not broken?

Wow.

1. Noted that your USB 3.0 external hard disk works on another computer.
~Noted that your USB 3.0 external hard disk does not works on your X1C6 (X1 Carbon 6th Gen).
~Noted that both of your X1C6 USB 3.0 ports works with other USB 2.0 computer peripherals.

2. As such, please try to update your X1C6 drivers at Lenovo/ThinkPad especially for your USB 3.0 function:

Good luck!
