x1 Carbon 2nd Gen - Screen replacement issues/troubleshoot

#1 Post by jmsnas » Mon Apr 27, 2020 11:04 am

Hello all,

Got my hands on an x1 Carbon 2nd gen which I want to fix up. Configured with an i5 4300u, and originally came configured with the wqhd touch display, which was severely cracked. Bought a replacement (non-touch, 1600x900) complete assembly on eBay.

Here's the issue: the original touch display was a 40 pin connector. The replacement assembly I purchased uses the same motherboard connector, but that connector runs to a 30 pin connector. The assembly I purchased is a 1600 x 900, non-touch display. Everything matches, and all the connectors fit properly, and I know for a fact that all of the components and cables are functional, yet, the computer does not recognize the display. The system will boot properly, and I get display through HDMI on my monitor. I just did a BIOS update for 2020 just to see if maybe something would happen, but still, the system doesn't recognize the built-in display.

Anyone know if the touchscreen-configured motherboard is compatible with a non-touch, lower resolution display? I would think that they would be compatible since the connectors are identical, but I know that sometimes it's not always as simple as "it fits, so it works".

Any suggestions are appreciated. I've tried to do some research on this topic prior to creating this posting, but I haven't been able to find anything useful. I would really like to be able to replace my ageing T420 with this thing.

Thanks for reading/responding.

Machine Type Model (from BIOS) - 20A8S18T00

Also I don't have a compatible WiFi card yet, waiting to order once I can get everything working properly. So I haven't been able to run any sort of Windows updates and diagnostics.

According to its parts list, there are different LCD-cables:
00HM151 N LCD cable WQHD
00HM152 N LCD cable Touch
00HM153 N LED cable Touch
04X5596 N LCD cable
04X5597 N LED cable
04X5598 N Touch cable
and different LCDs:
04X3923 N LGD 14.0"WQHD AG panel for non-touch LGD MODEL LP140QH1-SPB1
04X5488 N LCD ASM 14.0"WQHD AG(LGD) for Multitouch
04Y1584 N CMI 14.0"HD+ AG panel CMI N140FGE-EA2
04Y1585 N AUO 14.0"HD+ AG panel AUO B140RTN03.0

You probably have a wrong combo cable/LCD, or there is an LCD-whitelist.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Hi jmsnas,

Did you find a solution? I stand with a similar Gen 2 but have not yet bought parts.
