When did they go to the rubberized material?

I have been around ThinkPads a very long time. I am now on my 5th, a Gen 2 Carbon Extreme. I can't get over the texture surrounding the keyboard. it is a mess that I am constantly cleaning. My last ThinkPad, an x200, had the plastic tray that held up perfectly after 10 years. I put trackpad stickers on either side of the trackpad, which helps, because after only 2 weeks of ownership the rubber paint was degrading.

Anyone else hate this stuff?

PS - it's been a while!

Harking back to the days of X230, T410, T42, ThinkPad 560, the rubberized black coating material is/was the traditional one.

We actually prefer the rubberized black coating material on our X1 Extreme (1st Gen); closer to non-slip grip, less fingerprints.
(This is in contrast to our X1 Carbon 4th Gen, X1 Carbon 3rd Gen, X250).

ymmv.

On the back of the lid - yes, but none of those had rubberized coating on the palmrest (well, I don't know about the 560). I think only X300/X301 had it during those times.

Oh, yes, ThinkPad 560 also had rubberized coating on outside, but smooth plastic on palmrest also. You are correct!
