X1 Carbon 7h Gen dead monitor: LCD/Touch replacement

#1 Post by robca » Sat Sep 04, 2021 1:15 pm

I'm looking for a X1 Carbon with at least an 8th gen Intel processor, and I found a local X1 Carbon with a dead screen for a good price. The X1 originally had a non-touch 4K UHD screen (the dead one). I'm familiar with electronics, have all the necessary tools and successfully swapped components on various Lenovo and a Pixel phone (which was much worse :) )

I'd like to get an X1 with a touch screen, though, and I don't particularly care for the 4k display and the lower battery life.

Is it possible to swap the dead 4k LCD panel with a 1080p touch panel? or even use a 4k panel from a X1 Yoga, with touch and pen? Are the connectors identical and will the different LCD panels fit into the same bezels/ enclosure?

I looked at the hardware maintenance manual, but it's not entirely clear if there is compatibility, even if it seems to imply that all LCD panels are part 1180 in the manual https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobi ... hmm_en.pdf

Yoga gen4 and X1C gen7 use the same manual (and hence supposedly many the same parts).
Get it here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobi ... hmm_en.pdf
Haven't found any partslist/frubom for them though.
But check out this: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/prod ... compatible

Just replacing a non-touch LCD should be a straight swap.
But going from non-touch to touch will most likely require a different lid and/or lid parts.
It will also make the laptop slightly heavier and possibly thicker.

Thanks for the reply, I'll save it for the future. Someone else got that X1 before i could get it, so won't be able to post any follow-ups

For future reference : somehow get your hands on the exact type of one of the compatible screens.
then, google that screen
then there are like 3 websites that offer you all the data that are detailing all the details of the panels compatible (I strongly suggest panelook)

some if you scroll down have a section on screens with similar size, connector and protocol

in this way I found out that from G2 to G6 all the X1's have interchangeable screens, so I ordered a 1:1500 contrast 99.9srgb panel for my 3rd gen x1

I've tested and it works
now I just have to mill out a converter because it is shorter by 3mm, so I won't damage this 150usd panel :D
