X1C6 UHD vs FHD screen power consumption

#1 Post by dandreye » Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:16 pm

Hi All,

Where can I find power consumption figures for X1C6 UHD and FHD screens? Just came across a laptop advert claiming the FHD one consumes less battery and would like to see it in figures, e.g. how much time would an FHD one outlast a UHD one by (other things equal).

Thanks in advance!

The general rule of thumb going from UHD (ie: 4k) to FHD (1080p) for 16:9 LCD screens is that you generally double your real life usable battery life.

For example, I've got basically same spec X1 Extreme Gen 1 (UHK/4k OLED screen), and went to X1 Extreme Gen 3 (FHD 1080p) screen, and it's doubled my effective usable battery life while on the road! Which was the reason why I've switched to 1080p ;)

(All other specs basically the same for both above machines; i7 / 32 GB RAM, 2x SSD, both with GPU, etc.)
Daily Driver: (X1E3) X1 Extreme 3rd Gen | mobile broadband (WWAN)
Current Thinkpads: X1E3 | X1E1 | X1C10 | X1C9 | X1C4 | X1C3 | X230
Retired Thinkpads: X250 | T410 | T42 | 560 (circa 1996)

Not sure about X1C6 but I'm on my X1C5 right now and power draw shows as 3.6w. I'm on the third brightness setting from below, using Firefox (with NoScript) and I have like 30 tabs open. I'm on Windows 10 with the battery saver mode. With a new battery that'd be around 15 hours of real world usage.

* 7600U with the 400 nit, low power, Full HD screen.
* PL1 to 4W and PL2 to 8W in Throttlestop (the fan is always off).
X301: SU9600 | 8GB | 1TB | WXGA+
X1C5: 7600U | 16GB | 1TB | FHD
X1C9: 1145G7 | 16GB | 1TB | WUXGA | WWAN
X1Y8: 1365U | 32GB | 1TB | WUXGA
P14s G1 AMD: 4750U | 32GB | 1TB | PG FHD Touch
T14 G2: 1145G7 | 32GB | 1TB | FHD
