Hi everyone I'm Pablo
This weekend I'm going to see one ThinkPad and I'm thinking if is it worth it this model in 2024.
The laptop seems very clean and not used at all. For 240 euros (260 US Dollar) you will buy it?
The specs are this:
- CPU --> Intel Core i5 (8th Gen) 8265U / 1.6 GHz (Max Turbo Speed 3.9 GHz)
- RAM --> 8 GB 2133 MHz (soldered)
- Screen --> 14" FHD touch screen
- Storage --> 256 GB (NVMe)
- Weighs --> 1.35kg
Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for your reply! I'm thinking to install dual boot with Windows 11 and some Linux to programing stuff. What OS do you have installed in your X1?

I wouldn't get it since it only has 8GB RAM.

Thank you for your comment! Do you think 8GB of ram it would be low? In what cases do you would need more than 8GB of ram?

8GB RAM with Windows 10 and 11 is sufficient just for basic tasks.
You mentioned programming, which would likely need more RAM especially for bigger projects.

I have windows 11 as well and I really enjoy it. I've only used windows 10 before, and so far I like this way more, at least on a laptop like this one where I want to switch between windows often and customize everything.

If you plan to keep this a long time, I'd shy away from notebooks with soldered memory, which can't be upgraded. Here in the US you can probably get a L14 or E14 AMD Gen 1 for less without too much effort. They offer the much better Ryzen Gen 2 core and upgradeable memory, but the screen won't look as good. Perhaps it's different in Spain.

Hello!
Here in Spain these models that you told me costs at least 100€ more than that model I'm thinking to buy:
Do you think I need to wait to pay the difference and I get this model?

Probably depends on you. All I was trying to say is if you plan to keep it a while, I think most would plan to upgrade the memory down the road to preserve the performance. The X1C Yoga Gen4 doesn't allow for this and typically upgrading the memory is less expensive than buying a new notebook. If you only plan to keep it for a few years and do mundane tasks with it like Office, Internet or Media, the X1C Toga Gen4 should be fine for those uses. Don't forget the E14 if you're looking for something more wallet friendly.

Thank you for the advice! I was thinking yo buy a second hand motherboard (with i7 and 16 gig of RAM) to upgrade this X1 and shell the old one. I know it is not the best way to upgrade the X1, but the marketplace here is very expensive..
What do you think about change motherboard?
Thank you

I think its value is likely dependent on how much it costs to upgrade. The 16GB of memory will help keep it relevant longer, but the i7 won't do much, so I wouldn't pay more for it. The X1C Yoga Gen4 offers a better screen with touch. If you value those then perhaps it's worth spending money to get them. I'd pick a L14 or E14 because I prefer the better performance and don't care about having a touch screen, but that's only my 2¢. You can pick something else and make a good choice if it's rooted in what you need and want, which is different from me.

Finally I bougt that X1 Yoga. I installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and W11 Pro, it works very well! Maybe in the future I'd buy the motherboard with 16 gigs and upgrade it, but for now I'm fine with this. I was looking for a thin and versatil laptop. The screen is FHD and I think it's the best option for a long time battery life. If you have any question about this Thinkpad you can ask anything!
Thank you everyone in this post for the advices.

Felicidades! I'm typing this on a Mac with 8GB. It works great. If you're happy, that's all that matters.

Congratulations on your new machine.
When buying second hand, specially if it's an older model several generations old, I only consider the top of the line configuration. It's really just a hassle to get the right parts and swap them out; better to just buy the machine the way you really want it. The price difference is usually minimal. If I've learned something over the years is that there is ALWAYS a good deal if you look around.
Unless you actually enjoy doing it and money is not an issue. Then you can do anything you want.

A month ago I gifted the laptop to a friend who needs a modern laptop to work. He is very happy with W11, and tells me that the machine is working very well. So, I think that I'm gonna look arround to get another Thinkpad.

If you have an X230 thinkpad, that would even be worth it now
As long as you aren't doing heavy gaming, or similar, you should be fine. Starcraft 2 can be too much for it though.,
My point though, is that ivy bridge which is 2012 is fastest enough for the web (if you block ads which is wise!)
