x1 1st gen 2014 wont turn on

#1 Post by olopezus » Sat Aug 24, 2024 9:14 pm

Hi All, I have an x1 carbon from 2014.
Replaced the charge port and charger but wont turn on.
I checked v and get 20v at connector and at charge port it has yellow 3v and reds are 1v and batt wont charge.
I get green light on side of charge port but thats it.
I tried reset, battery disconnect, cmos disconnect, nothing
Any ideas please?

hello, welcome to the forum..
replaced the charge port..?
were you soldering a new part to the system board and why..?
sounds like it had suffered in the past..
so much to check, but first, what is the history..?
that is pretty old.. has it been working up to now, stored away for years..??
batteries do get old..
you'll just have to keep trying until you eliminate possible issues..
the wife uses an x1 gen 2, the terrible one with the crap keyboard, it still works well enough..

Hi Bill
The charge port is not soldered on, its connected. Laptop was working fine but the cat  dropped it and the conector and charger plug got damaged.

On the Lenovo sticker, what is the TYPE of that machine: 12xx or 34xx or 20xx or what?

You have an X1 Carbon Gen 1, usually known as X1C1.
Get the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Type 34xx) manual from the HMM link above.
Did your old charger have 65W or 90W?
Did you replace it with a genuine Lenovo charger of the same wattage?
If not, that may be your main problem.

hi Real, thanks for the response. I bought an original lenovo 90w.
I checked the hmm but besides checking voltage on charger's output, didnt find anything else to try.
:??:
I checked voltage on cmos batt and its good. Im trying to figure put how to manually charge the batt to see if itll start that way.
thanks

Did you get the correct DC-in cable (like this) and have you checked all the wires?
DC-IN cable is part of Base Misc KIT 04W3914.

I thought that could have been the problem so I installed the old one, but does the same thing :??:
Do you know what voltages I should be getting at battery connector wires? Thanks

Batteries are usually around 10-12V.
You can NOT connect a charger directly to a battery!

Alternative: find someone with the same machine and borrow its battery.

Have you tried the reset button? (page 48 in the HMM)
