X1 Carbon Gen 12 and 13 bottom cover interchangeability

#1 Post by dcfbf » Mon Sep 15, 2025 10:44 pm

I have an X1 Carbon Gen 12 and it's been great. The keyboard is snappy (even though it's 1.5mm) and stable, the trackpoint is...passable, and it is very light.
As the subject suggests though, I want to know if I can swap a Gen 13 bottom cover onto it.

The reason I want the magnesium bottom cover from the Gen 13 is so I can lower the weight of the Gen 12 from 1.1 kg to the same weight as the gen 13 at 1 kg. (or 0.99kg like lenovo likes to style it as)
I know that the laptop's weight will drop that much because the gen 13 also has a variant with an aluminum bottom cover and those are 1.1kg just like the gen 12.

They look identical so I'm 80% sure I can do it, but is there anything (misaligned clips, protruding metal) that would prevent me from doing this?

Thanks in advance :D
