Adding RAM to Lenovo IdeaPad 1 Laptop, 15.6”

#1 Post by tp570 » Thu Jul 18, 2024 10:35 am

Hope this is correct board area.

Picked up a Primeday Lenovo IdeaPad 1 Laptop, 15.6” and also a Crucial 16gb RAM clip.

My guess is, the board has on-board 8gb and one slot open which can accept max 32 (for 40gb total) but 20gb (8+16) is enough for intended use.

Is it just a matter of opening the dozen or so screws on bottom and it falls out or is there something else to be cautious/aware of ?

[Upgraded OS to Win11Pro, debloated internal apps, registry, removed all telemetry and uninstalled almost all programs, other than bare OS.]

If it upgradeable, that's how it's done these days. It probably depends on the model. The specs for the latest AMD models I could find says it's soldered, while Intel machines state they have one soldered stick on one open slot. Both assert the max memory is 16GB, which would certainly be true for the soldered AMD setups unless you have some serious skills, but it's not unusual for larger than the stated spec sticks to work perfectly fine. That would at least give you a chance on the Intels.

The specific model is
Ideapad 1 15" - 82R400EMUS

Tried to find spec sheets, tech sheets, anything to tell me if this can be done but came up short so as soon as shipment lands, will find out if the 16gb can be added or have to send it back to amazon. Will keep the laptop even if only 8gb as it was cheap.

Thank you for the PDF document

It contained this multiline explanation but I could not decipher which model it refers to

Memory
Max Memory
• 4GB soldered memory, not upgradable
• 8GB soldered memory, not upgradable
• 16GB soldered memory, not upgradable

So, I opened the 10 screws and saw visually -- Ahh, Yes, there is an open RAM slot which accepts up to 32gb clip (for total 40=8+32)

All good now !

The correct spec sheet can be found at https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PD ... 7_Spec.pdf
It says:
Max Memory[1]
• Up to 4GB (4GB soldered + empty SO-DIMM slot) DDR4-3200 offering
• Up to 16GB (8GB soldered + 8GB SO-DIMM) DDR4-3200 offering

You seem to have the second alternative, so the DIMM slot will accept an 8 GB module. How it will react if you insert a 16 GB module i can't predict.

When the paperwork was made for this laptop, maybe they did not yet have bigger than 8GB RAM modules for it.
Most likely the 16GB will work.

But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!
