1838-22F and getting SIM recognized
1838-22F and getting SIM recognized
Hi,
I'm in Ontario Canada and have tried installing my SIM card from my rogers phone into the SIM slot on my tablet. Nothing at all happened. I also tried the same with a SIM card from when I travelled in Egypt. (Not that I expected that one to be operational lol) The settings area did not show that a SIM card was installed either time nor (and obviously) did it kick up any features that would have lead me to believe that it was operational.
I installed Android Info to see if the SIM was there. Under Type: Mobile, it shows Unknown the same with Mobile_mms; mobile_supl and mobile_hlpri
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it to work for Rogers in Canada? And how I can tell for sure that the SIM card is being recognized by the system.
It was suggested to start examining the use of a root tool to unlock the device but I've yet to find any information on that either. I don't know if this machine is locked or not and calling through to support has not cleared that up.
It would be great to be able to work on 3G.
Thanks

Let me state the obvious first, did you install a 3G card? Your model is WiFi-only but can probably be upgraded (hence the SIM card slot).IbKJM wrote:Hi,

The obvious was certainly stated and yes it certainly is a 3G SIM card. Good question though. I tried a couple of them.Let me state the obvious first, did you install a 3G card? Your model is WiFi-only but can probably be upgraded (hence the SIM card slot).
As well you should check the information on the tablet- it is a 3G tablet and does support 3G - this is confirmed by Lenovo support (through a couple of phone calls before to posting this). Unless Lenovo support doesn't know what they are talking about?
Re: 1838-22F and getting SIM recognized
By 3G card, Volker doesn't mean the SIM-card, but the WWAN option, such as the Ericsson F5521gw:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-76660
If you go to lenovo support
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/
and use Quick Path to enter your MTM (machine type/model) 1838-22F, the support site will display specifications for your tablet. There is no mention of WWAN capability there. The hardware maintenance manual lists the 1838-22F as being "Wi-Fi only".

I am still learning about this tablet so I do appreciate any suggestions and I do follow up with them.
When I went to the support pages and did a search for my model: 1838-22F I do not get any results found- including anything for a manual. Results without the dash:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/cont ... us&lang=en
or with the dash:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/cont ... us&lang=en
Could you send the link you found on Lenovo for it?
Interesting with the WWAN card link. I can't see any means of opening this tablet to get anything inside- although I am sure it can be done. Would have to find something for Android. I am surprised support would not have mentioned that when I spoke with them. Having said that they told me that this model is very new and they have little info on it. Only visible card slots besides the SD is the one for a SIM.
OK, if you are right that it can only be used for WIFI- then I "should" be able to connect it to my cell via bluetooth and use the bluetooth for internet when I'm on the road? If so any suggestions on how to get it beyond the point of pairing with the phone but not "connected" Any suggestions on how to force the connections?
Thanks again.

Hello,
to make the support site list the specs for your tablet, click
http://support.lenovo.com/en_CA/default.page
Then click "Use quick path", enter MTM, and click "Find my product". Then the site will display the specs for the tablet. In case it doesn't work, here are the specs listed:
NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core ARM processor,1GB RAM,16GB,10.1in 1280x800 LCD,802.11bgn wireless,Bluetooth,Camera,2c Li-Poly,Android 3.1
Alternatively, you can use "Parts Lookup" to list every component in your Tablet:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_CA/product ... ookup.page
When you use parts lookup, in the "Machine Type" field, just enter the 4-digit type, i.e. 1838.
Instructions on how to open the tablet PC can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, available at:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides- ... D=UM008024

Re: 1838-22F and getting SIM recognized
In the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM), i saw that the "Wi-Fi only" models use a different base cover assembly. I don't know the difference between the "Wi-Fi only" and the "3G capable" base cover assemblies, but you might need a new base cover assembly if you want to use the Lenovo WWAN option.

OK, Thank you a lot. The links cleared up quite a few things with it and 3G. That was a great help!IbKJM wrote:[

Looks like I would have to get a card added- a Sierra Wireless MC8355 + Gobi 3000 to get "3G" but that would only allow for web browsing via another bill with my carrier rather than what I was hoping for- which was to turn it into a phone/tablet... So rather than heading in that direction and increasing my bills - I'm wanting to connect my tablet to my Nokia 5800 xpressmusic. and as I've quoted- I am able to pair the two but am not able to connect them.
Other than suggesting its a phone issue , any other suggestions are welcome - I'm researching the phone end of things too. I'm also trying to see if there is Android support on it. Trying to cover all bases.
Cheers!
oh yea, I'm not thinking of changing my phone anytime soon- if I can help it).

Do you know if any of these Ericsson cards will work or just the ones labeled Lenovo? http://www.ebay.com/bhp/ericsson-f5521gwTTY wrote:By 3G card, Volker doesn't mean the SIM-card, but the WWAN option, such as the Ericsson F5521gw:
