FYI "Slate" Tablet users

#1 Post by schen » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:53 am

I just thought I put this out there for any ThinkPad Tablet users. Since it's apparent that the Android tablet has been killed off, apparently there are distributors who are dumping their inventory. I picked up the stand-dock when I bought mine a few weeks ago at what I thought was a very good price of ~$30 shipped, but now we have this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0944910987

I've really like having this for mine since it speeds up the charge, as well as cut down on wear-and-tear on what appears to be a week element; the micro-USB port. Just the regular TP, 65w power adapter is worth more than the $20.50 that they are charging here!

Seems Lenovo is discontinuing this line in favour of WinRT for the next ARM slate. Methink this (10" tablet with full-size USB and stylus) fills quite a niche.

Cheers.

I love mine and use it everyday. With the ICS upgrade it is very fast. Mine is running Go Launcher HD, it is a wonderful tablet.

I use mine pretty much daily as well and am very happy with it. So much so that I just bought another one off of eBay this week for my wife! The price on these things are really down now, I'm assuming it has to do with Lenovo apparently abandoning Android in the ThinkPad side of the business, but that's fine by me. I also picked up a couple of Dell Streak 7s for my kids to keep them off of mine tablet!

My wife is an elementary school teacher, so she's really interested in all the free educational apps that are available. Although, her's will be a 16Gb version, I'm sure that'll be fine. The main thing is that it has an IPS screen so she can see well with her poor vision.

I hope your wife enjoys the tablet. Mine is the 16GB version also. I added a 32 GB SD card to it in order to augment the built in storage.

I picked one of those up last week. Arrived in a few days, genuine Lenovo in their box with tape still sealed. Works excellent. Your right on the prices, the bottom is falling out. Saw a 64GB model on eBay with genuine Lenovo keyboard folio, another leather folio and extra stylus go for $300. This would have set you back about $750 just a year ago.

The Thinkpad tablet will smoke the Nook Color. I had a Nook Color but gave it to buddy of mine. I put CM7 on it for him. Great starter tablet, the Nook makes for.

I just picked up one of these tablets (1838 16GB, Wi-Fi) off of eBay for $180. It was a factory refurb still sealed in the box. I'm very impressed with it so far. I love the assortment of ports as well as the ability to expand memory with an sdcard. It appears to be more solid (and better equipped) than the popular $200 Nexus and Nooks that are flooding the market. Too bad Lenovo has thrown in the towel on the Android OS in the Thinkpad family.

ok, android is not so bad but for me, windows in some variation would have been my first choice..

edit:

The windows 8 thinkpad tablet 2 seems to be coming in december.. according to lenovo..

lets hope they can meet this date for a pre-christmas delivery of the successor to the really neat thinkpad tablet android version..

I had a little bit of a weird situation yesterday where I spent 4+ hours sitting in silence while my students took their semester finals, then the next 5 hours driving a bus-load of junior high girls to and from their basketball games! What does that have to do with a tablet?

I spent part of the "silent" time downloading the entire archive of Maximum PC's old issues on PDF. They goes back to 2003, and is kind of interesting reading. Took the SD card out of the tablet, put it into the reader on my work L420 and copied them over. Then while I sat for several hours in a cold-draughty gym while 7th and 8th graders played basketball, I read. For those of you who haven't experienced it; junior high girls basketball is like a somewhat less interesting version of watching paint dry....and that's coming from someone who coached it for years!

We've really gotten to the point where the tablets are a normal part of our lives now. I tend to carry it around with me most places, use it to check email and weather real quick. Carry stacks of reading material with me without all the weight and hassle. I have found the keyboard/folio to be virtually useless for me. Love the charging stands though! Not only are they WAY faster to charge the tablet, but they seem to be selling in the $20 range these days. Just the included regular 20v/65w adapter is worth more than that!

This is what I was talking about regarding those tablet "docks":

Apparently, I was wrong. They are down to about $13, new! Better grab these up before they are all gone!

Just wondering, are you guys all running the stock firmware or if any of you is running 3rd party ones...?

Besides, anyone has used both the TPT and the Galaxy Note 10.1 and care to leave some comments...?

Thanks and cheers.

I can't comment on the Galaxy Note 10.1 except that I've picked them up and played with it in the store. It seemed nice, but not significant enough for me to take note.

Both of our ThinkPad Tablets run the stock firmware and I would expect to unless Lenovo does something else, which I wouldn't expect now that it's been orphaned. I must say that we're pretty happy with the way our tablets run. Our children run Honeycomb on their Dell Streak 7s and we have Ice Cream Sandwich on our Slates which I like much better. In fact, after trying some different launchers, I actually went back to using the custom Lenovo one that was included.

Just gave away my Thinkpad, dock and keyboard folio to a friend.

Why?

I got a Galaxy Note 10.1 and upgraded it to JB. Man its fast and the pen is way more accurate and GPS works perfectly. I loved my Thinkpad, but it was time to move on.

You guys can see by my sig that we aren't the current with the bleeding edge types anyway, but recently we had some friends who were looking for a tablet for their middle school aged daughter. Couldn't (or didn't want to) afford iPad, so we were chatting about it; so I showed her my tablet. She liked it so much, she pleaded with her mom to get her one (really liked the pen). So I found one for them, and they're happy as clams.

Our school district is about to go Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), so there's liable to be a mad scramble for tablets around here this summer. Mine works great at school; I've already tried it. It may be an orphaned product, but it's still pretty useful.

Of course it's useful and still powerful. Great tablet.

That being said, this Note 10.1 is superior. Yes I miss the USB Port and the hardware buttons ' but the pen is far more accurate. Also I can use a pen Keyboard and simply write out my responses as I am doing right now. It makes text input a lot faster when Compared to using a virtual keyboard. Yes, there are Some Minor grammar issues but still it is a very convenient Way to enter large amounts of text.

For example I haven't edited any part of this post. Some of My letters are bigger than Others Which the Software interprets as a capital letter. The built in Memo Software, S-note is amazing. And it includes full ps Touch ! Quad core, Jelly Bean, 2GB RAM , etc. Simply awesome . I <3 this tablet.

I've used both and by far, the Note 10.1 is the better (albiet more expensive) of the two. The inclusion of Wacom's technology and Samsung's software is excellent. The Note 10.1 is also capable of running a native Linux distro like Debian or Arch Linux. I have yet to try it though. I use this tablet as my sketchbook (Sketchbook Express), journal (Quill), textbook (Kuo, Adobe Reader), magazine (Flipboard, Google Magazines), and most of all notebook (Quill again).

This entire reply was completely handwritten.

Really? Has she tried Astroloquiz? It is my top educational app for my kids. This works amazing. My 4 years old girl knows to say new words that she got from the app and I’m really surprised.

You can check it here https://itunes.apple.com/app/astroloqui ... mpt=uo%3D2
