X1 Tablet Gen 3 issues

#1 Post by skinnie » Sun Dec 10, 2023 7:33 am

Hello all, 5months ago I bought an used X1 tablet Gen 3 used.
I was pleased with it, but after 2months the keyboard stopped working. Checking on internet apparently it’s common.
Decided to not fix it, since most of time I used it as a tablet or just with need for a mouse.
Now, four days ago I left it charging in the morning and when I came back on the end of the day, the screen wouldn’t turn on.
The power button had then white light on but I couldn’t turn off nor on. Decide to let the battery deplete and after some times it turned on and said something like “0271: check date and time settings. Press ESC to continue or F1 to enter setup”…but I have no keyboard. Since that day I couldn’t turn it on again.

Do you know if these issues/symptoms known and easily repairable by someone with skills (soldering?) or not at all? I hate to trash things and this computer suited well my needs (not long ago I still used a x230).

Let me know

Thank you for your answer, I will try to replace it.
I thought that by having a working battery, even if I had dead cmos battery I wouldn't had issues.
Is it the same as the T410s cmos? At my parents home I have a new one I bought for a T410s

T410s uses a CR-1632 (diameter 16mm, height 3.2mm) battery, such as https://www.ebay.ie/itm/125799347246
X1 Tablet Gen 3 uses a slightly thinner one, a CR-1620 (16/2.0) such as https://www.ebay.ie/itm/255960182959
The T410s is a little bit thicker, but might just fit in the tablet.
But check the wiring (red +, black -) from both.

Thanks, just disassembled the x1 tablet and the connector is not the same as t410s.
I will try to have someone to replace the battery on the new connector since I can only find used ones at 30eur.

Thank you a lot

You sure they are different?
The plugs should each have a red wire (+) and either a black or a white wire (-).
The plugs themselves can have any colour, usually white or black.
Compare both plugs next to each other, with the same side (open, visible connectors) up.
If both have the same plug shape, but the wire colours are different (e.g. left/right: one is red/black and the other black/red), you can carefully take those wires out and swap them.
Even swapping the plugs themselves can be done!

Here is a https://ibb.co/9tvf1My, they both have red and black wire but different thickness. Size is really different.

Assuming red/black are the same positions, the white (CR1620) plug should fit in the black 'slot'.
Or try swapping plugs...

I had to order a CMOS battery from Lenovo to get one with the correct connector. Even the stores that explicitly advertised batteries for the Gen 3 tablet were supplying the wrong battery.

As for the keyboard suddenly not working, it may be a driver problem, particularly if you're updated the driver recently. You need to revert back to the original driver. Remove the keyboard, delete the current driver, re-attach the keyboard, and restart to let Windows find its original driver again.

If you have an issue not being able to turn the computer off, reset it. There is a tiny hole on the back about three centimeters below the left hinge. Press the traditional paperclip end into the hole to reset the computer.
