I just wanted to say that I've been running a new SSD in my non-modded T43 for the past few days. So far, so good.ajkula66 wrote:Do bear one thing in mind: If you're using an unconverted T43, the whole concept of adapter+SSD may or may not work, and if it does work it will return weaker results than it would on a comparable T42/p.
The only way to run an SSD in a T43/p or R52 is to SATA-mod it. Previous T4x machines are a whole different ballgame.
The PATA to SATA bridge does require OS TRIM to be disabled, so it works best with an SSD that has active garbage collection (such as newer ones, or SandForce drives).
Since Windows 7 and Windows 8 default to forcing TRIM on at installation (even on platforms and devices that do not support it), it works best to install to another drive first, then disable TRIM, then clone that install to the SSD. I'm using a non-SandForce SSD at the moment, mostly for testing. TRIM being forced on causes trouble with SandForce on Windows install.
mSATA to PATA adapter (Marvell chipset): $25
Crucial M500 120GB SSD (Marvell chipset): $80
So for $105+shipping, you can have a nice and fast SSD for a T43. No SATA mod required.
