The only way to run an SSD in a T43/p or R52 is to SATA-mod it. Previous T4x machines are a whole different ballgame.
I just wanted to say that I've been running a new SSD in my non-modded T43 for the past few days. So far, so good.

The PATA to SATA bridge does require OS TRIM to be disabled, so it works best with an SSD that has active garbage collection (such as newer ones, or SandForce drives).

Since Windows 7 and Windows 8 default to forcing TRIM on at installation (even on platforms and devices that do not support it), it works best to install to another drive first, then disable TRIM, then clone that install to the SSD. I'm using a non-SandForce SSD at the moment, mostly for testing. TRIM being forced on causes trouble with SandForce on Windows install.

mSATA to PATA adapter (Marvell chipset): $25
Crucial M500 120GB SSD (Marvell chipset): $80

So for $105+shipping, you can have a nice and fast SSD for a T43. No SATA mod required.

Never had issues using TRIM with an Intel X25-V drive in an ultrabay bracket with PATA-to-SATA convertor, in a ThinkPad T43. No issues either installing Windows 8 on an Crucial M40 in the same bracket. TRIM is enabled by the OS and working just fine through the SATA UltraBay bracket (verified by TrimCheck-0.5.exe).

On the topic of using an SATA SSD in an unconverted T43: I don't see why you shouldn't! It'll improve the disk performance a lot, and I don't see why the same drive would be performing less than in a T42. Of course, the SATA mod is preferred (saves maybe 1 or 2 Watt on removing unnecessary SATA-PATA and PATA-SATA bridge chips in the final setup, and cranks up performance).

In the end, the converted T43's SATA operates in non-AHCI mode (as the BIOS has it deactivated, with no option to enable it).

Have you been able to turn off "Edge Swipe" in Windows 8.1?
I've been able to eliminate it on a T420s, but the evil charms bar rears its ugly head on a T43p.

I've tried:
1) Disabling the corners with Classic Shell
2) Decreasing the edge of the touch pad to zero.

I will answer my own question for the sake of anyone with the same problem.

If you don't want to be surprised by the Charms bar on the right and clock on the left in the middle of your work, don't install the Lenovo UltraNav driver despite its appearance as recent. There is no setting to disable edge swipes.

Neither Classic Shell (as of Aug 2014) nor any twiddling with the UltraNav settings will save you it.

If you've already downloaded and installed the UltraNav driver, first delete it using
Control Panel->Programs-> Add/Remove and reboot.

Next download the Synaptics v17_0_19_C_XP32_Vista32_Win7-32_XP64_Vista64_Win7-64_Acme_Inc driver.

Windows 8.1 will say the source is unrecognized, but it works.
