Welcome to the forum...
Here are the Windows 8 system requirements from Microsoft:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... quirements
The CPU in a T41 does not meet the first requirement. It does not support PAE.

No, it's a physical hardware limitation.

I just installed Windows 8 on my T61P and like it; performance is much better than Win7-64 and even WinXP), it seems the kernel is significantly improved, although I haven't done much reading up on win8 to find out what's changed since earlier versions.
A quick look at the CPU options for T41 shows that it will take a Pentium M 745 (1.8GHz) or even a Pentium M 755 (2GHz), which are DOthan cpu's and *do* have PAE/NX support on the CPU. I'm considering upgrading my T41 to an SSD and faster CPU anyway, as I like the SXGA+ screen on it so much, and putting Win8 on it would be good too.
Does anyone know whether, with one of these Dothan 90nm cpu's, Windows 8 will install on a T41? (I suspect the BIOS might be a limitation?).
edit: Doh.. looks like only the 533MHz Dothan's have PAE. So my T41 is stuck with Win7. Might be time to ditch it for a T60 with the same screen.

Re: thinkpad t41 win8 problem
Those Pentium M Dothan chips that support PAE were installed in T43 machines, and I don't think they will work in earlier T4x machines. Most 400MHz Dothan chips such as in the T42 did not support PAE, and the T41 machines were sold with Banias chips, non of which would support PAE.

It sounds like the only option which is reasonable to breathe life into my T41 is to install a 533MHz Dothan, like the Pentium M 780 - which does have PAE/NX support. It will run at the 400MHz clock rather than 533MHz in my T41, which will turn it into a 1.7GHz CPU - which would still be an upgrade (my T41 is 1.4GHz! its only used for word pro). The 780 cpu can be had for sub-$40 these days.
However its probably cheaper just to pick up a replacement T43p or T60 or T60p with a nice screen than to spend more time and money on the T41

Re: thinkpad t41 win8 problem
Yeah...that would be the way to go...or just run an OS that doesn't require PAE support from the CPU, if you want to continue to enjoy the T41.w0mbl3 wrote:However its probably cheaper just to pick up a replacement T43p or T60 or T60p with a nice screen than to spend more time and money on the T41
