Move Win8 upgrade file to another drive?
I ran the Win8 upgrade assistant, and later purchased and downloaded the Win8 Upgrade install file to my T60. The problem is that I downloaded it onto the XP install I am currently running. The plan was to put another SSD in and do a quick Vista Ultimate install, and then upgrade to Win8 from that install. I have no use for any of my 3 Vista Ultimate licenses anyway. But is there a way to move the Win8 upgrade install file onto another drive / install than the one I downloaded it to? Or aren't you given options to do that? Is it "tied" to the install you ran the assistant on and downloaded to file to?
I haven't dared to run the install process very far, so I haven't seen if it maybe gives you options later in the install process to put the install file on removable media. I'm not ready to give entirely up on being able to run XP quite yet. I also assume that as soon as the old license is "sacrificed" for upgrading, it's gone and can't be used for XP anymore. Added the fact that this is the XP license the T60 came with, I want to keep it. So I am a bit careful with playing around too much here.
Thanks in advance!

Well, I have tried both. In one instance, I did not get the option of creating removable media, in another I did.
Just try........
But if you have bought the upgrade, you can definitely regain the Win8 installation file and create media by using this link:
https://www.mswos.com/
just fill in the order number and other information and you will be ready to go.

Re: Move Win8 upgrade file to another drive?
Ok, so it worked. I initially didn't see what this summary page could do for me, before I realized I could open it from the Vista install. I did, and I was allowed to download the W8 upgrade file to the Vista install after I typed in the product key. So all went fine, and I am now typing this post from Win8 / IE10.
Only one unknown unit in the Device Manager (Which thaaankfully looks the same as it always has) so I will try to install some Thinkpad drivers tonight. I see that there is some talk about the standard display driver not being good enough, but we'll see. Otherwise it feels responsive and fast, even though I still run it from a 5400rpm mechanical drive. So I am still debating if I am going to put this Win8 install or Win7 on the main SSD as the main OS here. Not sure yet.. I just know that I need to install some 3rd party stuff to make it boot to the desktop and to have my Start Menu back.
Edit: This is just silly. I don't even see how I can turn it off.. That's just great.

Yeah, well, that is one oddity of Win8. But if you watched the instructions given as the installation went forth, you would know that you should move the mouse to the top or bottom right corner to gain visibility of the so called charms. The bottom one, settings, will give you a menu that contains the shut down function. One reason for this oddity might be, that on modern laptops you do not turn them off anymore - you let them go to sleep by closing the lid
You may also just type Ctrl+Alt+Delete - which brings you a menu including shut down function in the bottom right corner.
Be aware, that you can install language packs to your liking, simply type "language" in the search charm (the top one).

Re: Move Win8 upgrade file to another drive?
Well, Things seem to work a little better now. All drivers and system software that I used in XP is now installed through various compatibility settings, so all the Fn hotkeys Works, even from my Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard. And With the ATI driver and CCC in Place, my external monitor finally has the resolution it needs.
I now see more and more how this OS is Perfect for a touch screen based unit. But With a mouse and pointer, it simply doesn't work that well. At least not for me.. But I think With some software to give me back my Start menu, and make me able to work like I am used to in the Desktop environment, I think I will be fine. Maybe I will revert back to Win 7 as my daily driver OS, but we'll see.
Thanks for the feedback and help so far.

Re: Move Win8 upgrade file to another drive?
After using Win8 for some days, and adding the Stardock application that gives me the Start menu back, I see no problem staying with Win8 for now. And since I also have another unused Vista Ultimate license, and the upgrade is so cheap, I am considering buying another Win8 upgrade before the 31st of January. I will just keep that for now, and later install it on either my other T60 or any other newer computer that I might buy in the mean time.
And there is my next question around this: I proved that it can be installed on a different drive and different OS than it was originally downloaded to. But can it be downloaded to one machine and later installed on different machine? If we have reason to believe it can't, I will of course buy if from my other T60 just to make sure it can be used there later. No problem. But then I will know for sure it's limited to that one machine.

I've read that you can. But I don't have first hand experience that is the case.Norway Pad wrote:After using Win8 for some days, and adding the Stardock application that gives me the Start menu back, I see no problem staying with Win8 for now. Re: Move Win8 upgrade file to another drive?
Ok, thanks. I can't see why it wouldn't be possible either, unless the Win8 upgrade assistant sends machine specific data like BIOS number, MAC or something back to Microsoft. We already know it doesn't track the OS license key, as I used another OS for the upgrade than the one I downloaded to.
I think I will download it to my other T60 anyway to be on the safe side. Need to hurry, only a couple of days left..
