T60 and win8.1
T60 and win8.1
So half an hour after the official release, I downloaded and installed Win8.1 from Windows Store.
A fairly lengthy process, it probably took over an hour including several restarts. But apart from that, everything went smooth, and the only program which it was neccesary to uninstall was "Lenovo auto-scroll utility" - which I do not know what that does.
Everything else (programs, apps and settings) was as before under Win8, and the extra Thinkpad functions which are known for trouble are also working like before (On Screen Display, Power Manager).
So now I can boot directly into my old desktop!
And just to complete:
There is problems with some Lenovo-functions running on T60 under Windows 8, and to make matters worse, using Lenovos "System update" will give versions that will not install or run. Below I have compiled a list of the functions that I have installed succesfully, and which are running fine under Win8.1:
Active protection system:
g1sa66ww is 32bit version:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... MIGR-53150
g1sk60ww is 64bit version:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... MIGR-67046
Hotkey (OSD etc.):
8jvu23ww: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... migr-74261
Power Management Driver:
grku10ww: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=DS032258
Power Management version 6.36:
g6u432ww: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... MIGR-70601
This has to be run in W7 compatability mode

Re: T60 and win8.1
Ref. my post here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=113940 Did you see any behavior like what I describe before you updated the drivers? Grey screen with cursor only at boot, "frozen" (cursor-only operative) desktop, and random hanging when trying to open applications?
I now see that the Power Management Driver is updated for Win8.1, that will be my first try tonight. Even though I somehow doubt it will be that simple. I am also curious as to where you found the T60 compatible Power Manager for Win7, as the one listed on the T60 driver side is version 5.20 for XP.

No, I have not seen any behaviour as you have described. I'm still running the mentioned drivers on all the T60's in the family with no errors. I have stayed away from Lenovos System Update, which delivers updates that will not run on these old machines.

Yes, I make a big deal out of never using System Update too. I always do manual installs, even on newer computers.

Re: T60 and win8.1
I am looking into it. I am wondering how you choose which drivers/ updates to install and which ones to not/ let it be MS windows drivers?hhmcsv wrote:No, I have not seen any behaviour as you have described. Hello hhmcsv,
I have a T61 and I also upgraded to Windows 8 and then 8.1.
Did you notice a drastic change (for the worse) in your battery performance? I'm only getting 2+ hours and my battery is new (bought today).
Michael.

Re: T60 and win8.1
Hi Michael,
No, I have not seen such a consequence on battery behaviour. I just upgraded a T61 from 7 to 10 for a friend, but it will not be used much so I don't think I will have an answer for that. Only issue was, that it had a Intel 3945abg wifi-card, which I changed to the Atheros alternative as I did on my T60s. Otherwise it runs very smooth indeed on 10 after a clean install ("reset" from within Windows) after the regular upgrade using Media Creation Tool.

Yep, that's what I've done for this T61 as wellhhmcsv wrote:...Only issue was, that it had a Intel 3945abg wifi-card, which I changed to the Atheros alternative as I did on my T60s.
Can you tell me, if possible, and if you have a 9cell, fully charged, how long does the battery gauge indicator give you?
Re: T60 and win8.1
@Cronus71
No, unfortunately not. The T61 in question does not have a 9-cell-battery, and the smaller battery it does have is not too good. So it would not give a meaningful reference.
