Doesn't work on Windows 8.1.
Is it enough to run ClassicTheme.exe and select Install, then Enable classic theme now?
I got black screen instead of desktop -- no icons, no taskbar. And opened Explorer that just shows my files.

I wonder what would happen if we

1. disable DWM
2. run the taskbar so it runs as if DWM disabled
3. enable DWM
4. Disable theming via handle.

Not sure how well re-enabling DWM.exe after disabling it works. I really should test Windows 10 in a VM when I get the chance. If we get the classic theme to be fully functional with it, I'll definitely upgrade.

IbmPad: The Classic Theme patch doesn't work on Windows 10. It gives an error regarding not being able to find and ordnance in Explorer.exe.

Just upgraded to Windows 10. I've noticed this too, but only when using it with the dwm_redir.dll and dwmapi.dll files. If launched from C:\Windows without these files also in that directory, it should launch just fine. That said, this means that the taskbar is messed up, and as previously mentioned, the context menus don't have any text. For me, this is the most annoying thing. I would love to see a fix for this.

You can try to restore classic context menus using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.

Unfortunately it seems there is no working version of 7+ TT for Win10 yet.

No those context menus aren't the issue. I'm talking about folder context menus, like when you right-click on a file or folder (or inside a folder or on the desktop). Here is an image posted by roytam1 showing the issue: http://i.imgur.com/hRExha3.png

Haven't tested it yet, but I don't think it would be much different than Windows 8.
Anixx wrote:Regarding context menus have you tried to uncheck UPMCalc, item 17?
Yeah I tried that, and sadly it didn't work. Explorer context menus are weird in Windows 10.

What is the error message that you got before deleting those files?

Here are the error messages I get:
explorer.exe - Ordinal Not Found
The ordinal 159 could not be located in the dynamic link library
C:\Windows\Shells\ClassicTheme\Explorer.exe.
and
explorer.exe - Ordinal Not Found
The ordinal 1 could not be located in the dynamic link library
C:\Windows\Shells\ClassicTheme\dwm_rdr.dll.
Keep in mind that C:\Windows\Shells\ClassicTheme is where I was launching my copy of explorer.exe from (which really doesn't matter, and it should work the same as launching it from C:\Windows).

Well I decided to try disabling DWM.exe on Windows 10, and here are the results:

First of all, the login screen is pretty much the same as in Windows 8 without DWM, except this time there is no network icon, and it's displayed as a blank grey box instead of a blank black box (this might be different based on your color settings). After logging in, it will be pretty much the same as Windows 8 without DWM. The start menu and the action center won't load, and the same goes for any metro-ish UI elements. I did however notice some differences with the classic theme. First of all, the right-click menus are still broken, meaning the issue with them isn't DWM related. Unfortunately the taskbar still seems to be broken. I've tried messing around with the settings to fix it, but unfortunately had no luck in doing so. I didn't find anything else, but I may have missed something.

Hello, sorry for not having replied for a long time. I just installed Win 10 in a VM to test it.

For the context menu problem, try to add this registry value (DWORD) :

Code: Select all

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FlightedFeatures\ImmersiveContextMenu = 0
Regarding the “Ordinal xxx missing” error, it is just a DLL export issue; it just needs to be compiled again using the Windows 10's dwmapi.dll file.

I will add this mod to the program and make some tests to try to fix other things when I will have some time…
Cur. : T61p (Win7 x64, C2D T9300 2.5GHz @ 950mV, 4GB RAM, QuadroFX 570m @ 900mV SXGA+ 15")
Prev. : T42p (Win 7 and XP, PM755 2.0GHz @ 700–1148mV, 1.5GB RAM, FireGL T2); T30 (Win 2000, P4M 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM, Radeon 7500); 390E (Win 3.11, Celeron 300MHz, 160MB RAM)
Please excuse my bad English.

Once again IBMPad, you are awesome! The registry tweak you posted does work, and now the classic theme is actually worth using in Windows 10 for me. Can't wait for future updates, especially for dwmapi.dll. If that fixes the taskbar, then I'd say that Windows 10's classic theme would be on-par with Windows 8's.

Also, one nice thing about the classic theme in Windows 10: the issue of 3 unknown programs sometimes appearing in Windows 8's alt+tab (usually after the computer is woken up) doesn't seem to exist in Windows 10.

Has anyone figured out why some Control Panel pages fail to load yet? The biggest reason I ask is because I have a friend who would like to use the classic theme, but he frequently switches between Chinese and English on his computer, so he wouldn't be able to load the Languages page with the classic theme. Unless there is an alternative language UI available. I've found Winaero's Personalization Panel for Windows 10 to be an excellent alternative for the Personalization page.

On a slightly unrelated note, I guess there was an issue with scheduled tasks on my old Windows 8.1 installation. Since I upgraded to Windows 10, I've been using that to start ClassicThemeA.exe whenever I log in. So that fixes the issues I had with this program starting up!

Why one would need to use Control panel to switch languages?

I don't know, I think he's more concerned about being able to manage the languages or something. I really only use English on my computer, so I'm not really experienced with using languages on my system. Is there another way to change/manage languages?

Ah ok. I've heard Windows Key+Space too.

Anyway I've noticed that the the taskbar seems to ignore the ImmersiveContextMenu registry value, and will always have it enabled regardless of what the registry says. It's a little bit annoying, but I can live with it.

I mean empty areas on the taskbar. Luckily program context menus in the taskbar work just fine. That would be horrible if they didn't.

I've noticed that deskn.cpl tends to freeze on Windows 10 when applying new scheme settings. Am I the only one with this issue, or are others getting it too?
