T450 VS T460 what to buy
T450 VS T460 what to buy
What would be a better buy? a used T450 or a used T460? I was thinking of going with a T450 but don't know... I'm wanting to go with 12 GB ram, a dedicated GTX 940MX graphics card and a socketed quad core CPU but what do you think? I'm wanting to spend the least amount of money possible... I'm not afraid to build my own laptop from parts to get what I need and I've got some Thinkpads to sell as well so it's not that bad... what do you recommend? most computers with dedicated graphics are 15-17 inches so thinkpad 14 inch is the best...
I'd also consider an L450 or L460 if the price is right and specs are good but don't know let me know...

1: No socketed CPUs after 4th gen.
2: They are practically identical machines. Performance will be very similar

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

When you have the choice and want to work with video encoding/decoding or watch a lot of streaming, i'd skip the xx50 generation completely: The Broadwell was a very late, very shortlived CPU generation that offered no HW decoding for HEVC/H.265 and VP9, which the xx60/Skylake did. Optimal would be the Kaby Lake with more modern decoding profiles and DRM.
Apart from that, performance would be very similar.

You can swap the panel on the T460 for any Full HD you'd like, on the T450 you can but unless you use Linux you will not be able to lower the brightness, it will be stuck at 100%, supposedly there's a new EDID override to make the brightness work but couldn't figure out when I had a T450 on my hands, go T460 or better yet a T460p and you can swap to a WQHD

Re: T450 VS T460 what to buy
I'd only want the 1366x768 display as the higher resolution will tax my GPU too much when using more demanding programs and gamesagarza wrote:You can swap the panel on the T460 for any Full HD you'd like, on the T450 you can but unless you use Linux you will not be able to lower the brightness, it will be stuck at 100%, supposedly there's a new EDID override to make the brightness work but couldn't figure out when I had a T450 on my hands, go T460 or better yet a T460p and you can swap to a WQHD
