[CLOSED] De-modifying a T440p reopened

#1 Post by Peter Linu » Fri Mar 26, 2021 6:19 am

Hiyall,
It's bin a while (2 years).
I received excellent support here when I originally hotted up a T440p. Trouble is; I can't use the speed for my modest usage. Furthermore because of the mods, the heat is excruciating. I connected a 'Opolar' exhaust. Heat is no longer a problem but noise is!
It currently has a i7 chip and 16Gb RAM.
Will reinstalling the original chip stop the heating or will I need to return to 8Gb RAM as well?

Hi, downgrading the CPU will definitely solve the heat issue. Heat has nothing to do with the amount of RAM you're rocking. That said I'm wondering if limiting the CPU to slightly lower frequency than maximum would yield a cool enough machine still with better performance than the original? What CPU have got in there? What OS are you running?

I had similar experience having to return my T420 from i7 2630qm back to stock i5 2520m. Less throttling, heat, and instability yielded increased performance with the dual i5 than the quad i7. In my experience only the 15" models are equipped with capable enough heatsinks for the quads. :( And I had modified the recommended T430 dGPU unit into the T420, to no improvement.

My T420 also runs 16GB. As atagunov said, RAM will have no effect on the heating problem.

Quads:
i7-4700mq is the lowest 47W TDP.
i7-4702mq and i7-4712mq have lower TDP of 37W,

The dual-core i7-4600m and i5 CPUs also have 37W TDP.

Refreshing thermal paste with a very good one may also help you.

And then there is also Throttlestop!

Hi atagunov,
Thanx for the idea. I think I'll try that first. If it doesn't work, I can then replace the chip.

Hi Guys,
I have been advised to try "cpufreq_42-1_all.deb". Intuitive manipulation makes no difference. Where might I find instructions?

If you run Windows, try https://www.techpowerup.com/download/te ... ottlestop/
If Linux, try https://github.com/agoose77/throttlestop or https://pypi.org/project/undervolt/
No need then to swap CPU or remove RAM.
But I would still refresh thermal paste.

Hi RealBlackStuff,
The LINUX MINT page to which you have linked me has a profusion of code that I copy'pasted into my terminal and much of which returned errors. What am I doing wrong?

If it's a Python program, then you should save it to a text file with the extension .py, then use the python interpreter to execute it.

I tried Linux, try https://github.com/agoose77/throttlestop or https://pypi.org/project/undervolt/

RBS,
I would appreciate some help learning how to use this potentially very useful program. I don't know how to construct code but I do know how to use it. If you plan to go this way, I will require you to give me the following:
1. sudo x y z
2. ls a b -c, etc.

I would be very grateful for your assistance.

I'm not RBS, and have no T440p, but I did manage to undervolt a Haswell desktop on Linux a while back. Could you wait a bit so I can dig up some old notes?

Update: I think I used this particular program: https://github.com/kitsunyan/intel-undervolt

I downloaded the source using git, so you need that installed. To compile, you'll need GCC, and maybe some stuff as well. I'm using Debian, and installed the build-essential package. If you're using Debian or any Debian-derived distro, the package name is most likely the same.

Other than running it from a life-DVD, I have no Linux experience.
No idea what you mean with that alphabet-soup request.

The 'alphabet soup' is my way of saying terminal code.
