ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Hi there!
It's my first post on this forum, have been reading a lot of information about different panels on the T480. Most of you use N140HCG-GQ2 and thats a good one considering the low power usage and the better colour.
Taking a look on panelook.com I just found a new panel and I don't have any information for this neither here or Reddit. Looking on the specs it seems should work and I have been comparing against the GQ2 seems better too. (Maybe I'm wrong but that's is way I'm posting here for some kind of help).
The model I plan to use is this:
https://www.panelook.com/N140HCG-GN1_I ... 51138.html
Main differences in the GN1 are higher contrast, less power consumption and low blue light emission compared to the GQ2 and one more important thing is also cheaper than the GQ2 also.
if we look at the rear of the panels one is full rectangle and the other one has a sub board in the bottom part where the connector is. Do you think this is a problem?

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Yes, I was considering the some of those too:
NE140FHM-N61, great contrast ratio at 1500:1 but only 6bit+FRC GRAY, 93% RGB coverage, 2,4-2,8w consumption
N140HCG-GQ2, 800:1 contrast ratio, 8bit GRAY but 100% RGB coverage, 3,05w consumption
N140HCG-GN1, great contrast ratio at 1500:1, 8 bit GRAY, 100% RGB coverage, low blue light emission, 2,5w consumption.
https://www.panelook.com/modelcompare. ... 1388,51138
But the question is, should it work?
The connector is not placed in the same place, do the connection will connect or will be short?
Haven't seen any review, just an eBay seller that points the screen as used on a Dell laptop.

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Has someone tried to install it in a T480? It should work without a problem electrically, as it uses a standard EDP connector and protocol, I am mainly worried about the control board being on the back, and pushing on the screen.
The screen is thinner than the original panels for T480, so probably using a thicker brackets could help solve that issue.
I also thought about removing the insulating tape and unfolding the controller board so it sits in the same place as in other panels. The edp cable is long enough to be turned around upside down and connect properly, it is longer than needed.
I cracked my N140HCG-GQ2 and am looking for a replacement. The lower power consumption (2.5W vs 3.05W) and much better contrast ratio (1500:1 vs 800:1) as well as price and availability just wants me to install an GN1 panel. With either one of those we eould need to use the supporting metal brackets, which could be modified (might not be needed) to prop up the display enough, so the control board fits in its original spot underneath the lcd. The GQ2 and GN1 are a bit thinner than the original panels used in T480, so it shoudld be just a matter of either using a thicker support bracket, or modifying one, to be just a tiny bit thicker.
The thing that worried me the most, is the possibility of getting screen pressure/white spots while using it, because of the added on thickness on the underside. Theoretically it would be possible to save enough space by cutting out a piece of supporting foam from the lid.
I bought a broken N140HCE-G52, which features a similar design, I will try to experiment on that one. The GN1 seems to be much better than Gq2 because of the contrast ratio and lower power consumption.

Hi,
I'm curious if you have some update on that project?
Did you manage to fit the N140HCG-GN1 ?
Cheers.

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Hi Folks,
I did some research and I found out the N140HCG-GN1 panel can be used in these 2 laptop models:
ASUS UX433
Dell 7420
I found this review for the Dell 7420: https://youtu.be/egW4gNXhWTI?t=230
It's got really good performance (contrast was measured at 1:1800)
Here you can see how it looks once calibrated: https://youtu.be/GdI7vpx5B1U?t=1090
That's better than the performance advertised here:
https://www.panelook.com/N140HCG-GN1_In ... 51138.html
The original one on the ASUS is not actually made by Innolux but it's made by Optronics (and other manufacturers like AUO)
https://www.blisscomputers.net/dell-n14 ... en-252221/
and it goes by that reference: B140HAN03.2 HW3A https://www.panelook.com/modeldetail.php?id=47806
It's not as good as the Innolux display.
But for reference about how it's mounted, you can see in that video: https://youtu.be/BWHi4fbycus?t=182
It looks like the foam (with glue) on each side of the display is slightly raised and the mounting brackets raise the display too.
That's probably how they managed to fit the control board on the underside of the display.
You could probably do the same on a Lenovo T480 to 495S if the eDP cable is long enough.
I also found out about the specs of the N140HCG-GQ2.
Even though, the contrast is advertised at 800:1, it seems it was measured at 1448:1
See Notebookcheck review: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Th ... 716.0.html
And this other review too: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-s- ... 538.0.html
where they mentioned all three models easily surpass the advertised contrast ratio.
My conclusion is that I'm not sure the N140HCG-GN1 is far better than the N140HCG-GQ2.
The data advertised don't always make justice to how good the display looks in reality.
It's possible the N140HCG-GQ2 is slightly better but is it worth the hassle of fiddling with some extra foam on the bracket and cable management too
I'm not really sure about that. Also adding some extra foam might also mess up with the bezel horizontal alignment too.
I personally would not go for the N140HCG-GN1 but if somebody managed to fit it, I'd like to hear from you.
Cheers !

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Hi, I (carelessly) purchased a N140HCG-GN1 to fit an E14 Gen 3. The screen hasn't arrived yet, but I just realised that it lacks the sub board that the current screen has, so I am in a similar situation to OP.
Was wandering if anybody had any luck fitting this screen in the T480, or maybe I should start ordering the GQ2 variant

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
I suggest you buy the original Lenovo screen, that is, the screen with FRU. In many cases, there will be many strange little problems when the non-Lenovo original screen is installed on the ThinkPad laptop.
Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Has anybody managed to install a N140HCG-GN1 in the T480 yet?
Does it fit if you unroll the PCB on the back of the screen, is the LCD cable long enough?
Best,
Martin

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
I've tested a N140HCG-GN1 in a T480 and T480s, it works and looks good. You need to loosen up the eDP cable a little bit. It doesn't have mounting tabs so tape or get screw tabs from aliexpress.

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Here's a nice list of panels I've found to be good 14" ones.
MNE001BA1-1 seems best but there's many ones I missed due to missing datasheets.
Awesome ones seem to be: N140HCG-GE1, NE140FHM-N6L V8, NE140FHM-N6L, N140HCG-GN1, N140HCG-GQ2.
Honorable mentions: NE140FHM-N62 (500 nit), and LQ140Z1JW01 - 3200x1800 monitor but very low power and high nits. Crazy nice. Here's list: https://i.imgur.com/frYuLmq.png
I'm mostly curious about N140HCG-GE1. Does anyone have any info on it?

Re: ThinkPad T480 FHD N140HCG-GN1 panel
Hello. I do not have a T480 (wife has a newer Lenovo + work Thinkpad, and used to have another Thinkpad, so I'm familiar with them).
I have an older Dell Latitude that came with an AUO B140HAN01.3 that's starting to have a backlight issue. It looks like the T480 can also take that screen, so I'm assuming the position of the 30-pin eDP and other details are the same as in a T480 (if they're really drop-in options for both laptops). From other posts and guides, I found the same info for a T440p, which also mention the possibility of using the Innolux screens as replacements.
I've been looking at trying either the N140HGC-GN1 or -GQ2 as a replacement, but worry that the existing connector cable might not reach quite right. You said you had to "loosen up" your cable a little bit. In my laptop, the cable runs from the upper left-hand side of the laptop body, up through the left hinge, and across the bottom of the lid to the connector, which is again, toward the left side of the screen (when it's installed, facing you).
Anyway, given your experience, is the connector just slightly off from the position on your original screen, or far enough that you think it might not work in my situation? I assume from what you said that the connector on these screens may be slightly further toward the center than some other, older models.
Thanks
