Of course, the 970 Evo Plus is compatible with the T480. I currently have a 2TB model installed in my T480.
T480 (Intel Core i5-8350U 32GB DDR4)
T430 (Intel Core i7-3632QM @ 2200MHz, 16GB DDR3L)
X100e (AMD Athlon MV40 @ 1600MHz, 4GB DDR2)
R50e (Intel Pentium M 715 @ 1500MHz, 512MB DDR)
T23 (Intel Pentium III M 1133 @ 1133MHz, 512MB DDR)

If your T480 currently has a 2.5" SATA SSD, you'll need the NVMe caddy and the cable for it.

See: https://www.ebay.com/itm/283614982565

Do note that the T480 only has a PCIe 3.0 x2 link for the NVMe slot so the max read speed won't be in the 3,500 MB/sec range.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
