T430 IPS mod - where to start?

#1 Post by astral » Sun Jun 11, 2023 12:49 pm

I’m sick of 1366 on my otherwise lovely T430 and would like to get a 1080p or maybe even 1440p panel in there. I know there have been a bunch of converters over the years and some with flickering issues so I’m just wondering which one I should go and get nowadays. And also on panel compatibility. Which ones work with which adapters, and how expensive will getting one of those be? I’d like to get a Qhd panel installed if possible but I’d rather go 1080 is a qhd panel is going to cost an arm and a leg.

I've had success with eq-store's qhd kit on eBay. They, and many more stores, also have fhd kit. Their listings will say what panels are tested compatible.

Imo search here and on the subreddit and you'll find many success stories.

alright thanks! looks like qhd screens are very expensive so it's gonna be 1080 for me. don't want to spend 200 dollars on a screen upgrade for a 11 year old laptop, even if it's a very nice one.

I was out the door less than $200 shipped, you would be a little over that, but the 1440p screen in my t420 is amazing. I vote for the big boy upgrade.

eh. dont exactly think i need that many pixels for this. would look nice but not worth a 100 dollar price difference. 1080 is enough i think.

new question though:

would the following screen be proper for this adapter?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/354646074488
https://www.ebay.com/itm/373067745138

my intuition says it should since the p/ns match but ive heard a lot about these mods and ive also heard a lot about people having trouble with them. stuff like screens being not exactly the right part number and getting thrown off. and flickering stuff. also quality - ive heard before about the "screen lottery" with newer thinkpads. i don't care if a different compatible lcd is slightly better making it technically "the best one" for 50 dollars more, but i also dont want to be stuck with junk.
thanks!

Does this screen have screw holes in the right place or is adhesive tape needed to secure the screen to the laptop?

Not all of the holes fit if I remember correctly, I made a standoff plate and did use some adhesive if I remember correctly, mostly on the right side behind the screen.

Hey astral I know the thread isn't exactly new, but how well did your display swap work out in the end? Were you able to find a not to expansive screen and controller and do you remember running into any problems during the replacement or after finishing the mod?

Mod worked out great and the display still works great today. No real notes.
