While I can understand the need and desire for a light laptop. For me the priority is performance and as much ram as I can stuff in it. All these so called ultabooks are pretty much configured the same:
[*]4GB Ram soldered to the board no upgrade at all - I need a minimum of 16G
[*]Non removable battery - Again I want to beable to swap the battery out.
[*]Low performace CPU's generally under 2Ghz - While that is fine for most folks and for most tasks It just will not cut it for what I need.

This T440s like the T430s before it is a comprimise between performace and portability. If you need the performance, upgradable memory, ultrabay for more HD space. then the T4xxs seriese is really the only option on the market right now worth considering.

Whith the reported upgrades to the line:
[*]Hot swappable battery - Man that would be great!!!
[*]FHD dispaly and even IPS maybe...

They have a killer system on there hands with no one else even coming close for the person that needs those features. And lets be honest there are allot of people that need a system that is beefer than what the current ultabooks can deliver.

The T440s is cached in Google: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=us

Also the hot swap battery works like this: There is one fixed battery underneath the palmrest and one removable battery on the back, just like we know it from the the T430.

They sacrificed usability for fancy, no amount of ThinkPad logos or skimpy ladies will make this a ThinkPad.

But let me be clear about one point: Lenovo is not the only brand that I find uninteresting. Excepting the Sony Pro 13, virtually none of the other current laptops interest me. Some people here think I am biased against Lenovo, because I seem to bash Lenovo all the time, but I do that only because this forum is about Lenovo Thinkpads. If it were a Dell forum, for example, you would see me bash Dell all the time as well. I would probably keep complaining about how the Latitudes are getting uglier and uglier; that most 14.* inch and smaller Dells only have 1366x768 resolution; how heavy and bulky the Precisions are; that Dell still hasn't abolished the entire Inspiron line; etc. etc. I should also add that my displeasure with Lenovo started quite recently. The laptop that I have recommended the most times is probably the T60/60p, which was a Lenovo Thinkpad rather than an IBM. (The Panasonic CF-Y7 may be a close second.) I also own four Lenovo L220X monitors.

I totally understand that different people have different requirements. When I said "starting at 3.6 lbs" was too heavy, I wasn't speaking on behalf of all humanity. In fact, I wasn't even saying that I would never buy a 3.6-lb laptop -- for instance, I love using my 7.95-lb Gateway as a desktop replacement. Instead, I was referring specifically to the next laptop that I want to buy, one that will replace my 1.41-lb Sony X Series, 2.23-lb Dell E4200 (which I killed recently by attempting a risky mod), and my 3.34-lb Panasonic CF-Y7. I want something that has a touchscreen with at least the CF-Y7's 1400x1050 (i.e. 1600x900 would be too low), and that weighs significantly less than the CF-Y7. A T440s with a FHD touchscreen would be close to 4 lbs.

If I wanted to own just one laptop, the T440s would be one of the top candidates to consider. But I prefer to have one huge giant desktop replacement unit, plus one or two much lighter laptops that I travel with. To me, even the 3.34-lb CF-Y7 is a bit too heavy for traveling, so it wouldn't make sense to replace it with a ~4-lb FHD touchscreen T440s.

Notice that the User Guide does not mention 1920x1080 display resolution nor IPS one.

I know the T500s had them (I am currently using a T500 20825XU). I don't recall off the top of my head if the T510s had regular or chiclet keyboards.

EDIT: I forgot to mention: I'm about at the end of (my) life for my current T500. I have been deploying T530s to my users. When I saw the release of the T431s, I was hopeful that a T531 was around the corner. But, alas, it hasn't happened. I'm guessing, as others have suggested, that Lenovo will wait until this Fall and release a Haswell-based upgrade to the T5xx lines.

@jkkang

I am using a T500 as well and it works well for my purposes. A fresh install of W7 and minimizing both start-up and non-essential programs as well is always my priority on any OS I work with. As far as the T5xx and chiclet keyboards the older scissor-switch keyboards (?) remained a mainstay on the T5xx until the T530. Not sure when the T540 will be released as everything I have heard seems to be pure speculation at this point.

Edit:

George beat me to it :?

Bad news, at least to me...

New Fingerprint Reader
- Fingerprint reader design is change from T4301s
-- FPR sensor on T431s is Authentec sensor
- New Fingerprint Reader sensor : Validity sensor
- New Fingerprint Reader software : Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro
- Feature changed :
-- POA (Power On Authentication) function is NOT supported with Validity sensor

The same is for X240s and maybe all new ThinkPads

Admin edit: Removed huge (~240KB) image and replaced it with text

Seems like only one memory slot is listed as FRU. So does that mean 8GB is the max or is there some built-in memory as well?

My guess would be the lack of support for PoA (Power on Authentication)?

4GB soldered with an open socket, so 12GB max is my guess.

Unless and until they come up with a compatible 16GB single socket DIMM?

Info is back up on the Lenovo site, although full specs are still missing:

Pending seeing details, this looks pretty ideal to me. This would be my first thinkpad, and I'm rather anxious to have it (my current rig is quite inadequate at this point).

My question is: can someone briefly characterize how Lenovo works with regard to new hardware releases? i.e. do they follow an Apple-esque model (announce three months prior to units shipping, etc), or would I (hopefully!) be looking at delivery in days after the official announcement?

Thanks!

Typically, they'll say it's ready and then you can configure one. I'd expect at least three weeks minimum before you have it in your hands. There may be some pre-configured ready to ship machines available, though they tend to be more expensive.

Mabe T420 with T440's display mod ? Lets wait ... :)
I wouldn't count on this. All new ThinkPads will use eDP (Embedded Display Port) as the interface between the system board and the panel. This is incompatible with LVDS used in previous generations.

This is probably one of the reasons why they are suddenly able to use some newer, better quality panels.

Exactly, due to the new supplier for fingerprint reader (for all new ThinkPads), there is now Power On function. Strange, that company like Lenovo cannot create their own version and rather simply gives their customers worse product...

It seems it'll only be the FHD panels that are better (IPS) though. The HD+ ones seem to be the same non-IPS panels as the T431s. The machines are stating to seep out now anyway, so there should be more concrete info very soon.

Not strange at all. Pretty much every computer manufacturer gets the individual components from suppliers. Rarely do they manufacture their own unless they own the subsidiary that performs the manufacturing.

Also, keep in mind that Apple bought AuthenTec last year. That may have played a role in Lenovo looking for a new supplier.

I mean "strange" in way, that Lenovo knew about Authentec future and their need to find another vendor. So they should figure out somehow (cooperate with the vendor) and bring the same features for the new sensor, as they were in the old one...

End of October, sez these new web pages:

http://www.pcper.com/news/General-Tech/ ... Pad-Lineup

http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/03/leno ... s440-s540/

They're now reporting SSD up to 512GB, which is quite interesting.

Info on the X240 also very nice - a 1080p 12.5" screen.

In all of this talk of the new models, there's been no mention of a T540. Has anyone else seen anything about whether there will be an updated 15" T model?
