I have a T430u and am trying to update to the latest BIOS.
When I boot up the BIOS update CD I get somthing about trying to do somthing over PXE on IPv4 and then IPv6 but then it doesn't get a response and just boots my OS.
any ideas?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
I'm assuming you've downloaded the appropriate file from Lenovo Support. That file needs to be written to a blank CD-R or CD-RW using a program that can handle the special image (.ISO) file format. You cannot use the normal write method. One program that can easily burn .ISO files is CDBurnerXP.
The messages you're getting about PXE (preboot execution environment) and then booting your hard drive's OS, sounds like either you don't have a bootable CD disk or the optical drive is not in the boot order before the hard drive. To cure the first, use CDBurnerXP as described above. To fix the second, press the F12 key at turn-on to get the Boot Device menu, then select your optical drive.

I'm running linux and created the CD with Brasero Disc Burner, there should be no issues there, I have tried a DVD and a USB as well.
I got the .ISO from here:
