New SSD for T430

#1 Post by cl0ne » Wed Aug 14, 2013 8:03 am

Just ordered a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB for my newly refurbed T430 i5. Pretty excited, does anyone have a 840 or 840 pro? How do you think it'll compare against the 840 EVO in layman terms?

Only significant difference between the "pro" vs the regular 840 is the type of NAND flash chips used. Obviously the pro version have the better chips. Beyond that, in terms of performance and speed, I doubt you'll notice any difference. I have a couple of 840 (non-pro) myself and like it a lot. Though honestly I can't tell a difference between these two SSD and any of the various other SSD I have and have used from just about every manufacturer. Fortunately none have ever failed on me. If and when it does, no biggie, everything of importance is backed up in triplicate.

If you want a more technical, but still understandable, review AnandTech have a great review of the EVO series. It's worth at least skimming through.

I read around Anandtech a little while ago when looking for a new SSD. The EVO seems to sit between the 840 and the Pro in performance, as it does in street price.

Looks like a great drive. I bet I couldn't notice the difference between them in the real world though.
