T430: Beeps five times, dead screen

#1 Post by mrt430 » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:32 am

Hi all,

I updated my T430 today via SystemUpdate, one of the update is a BIOS update. I have them download and installed. After restart, the BIOS went on then my PC suddenly restarted. Now everytime I open it I hear five short beeps then a pause then another five short beeps while having a blank screen.

Additional Info: Windows 8 64-bit, Lenovo Thinkpad T430,

Please help!

UPDATE:

I have tried the following and didn't work:

Remove the battery pack
Remove the CMOS battery

I need to know how to reset the bios if that's the solution.

According to the HMM, 5 beeps is a system board failure. I would contact Lenovo and find out what they will do to help since it appears the automatic update process failed unless someone else has another option.

Hi, I registered to reply to this topic even though its a bit dated. I have the same problem and Lenovo is no help at all. System Update downloaded and installed some software and now it beeps 5x and nothing. I tried WINCRISIS. I tried renaming both .fl1 and .fl2 files to bios.wph but nothing.

I tried holding down all sorts of key combinations FN+B R Win K and none of them worked. I tried downloading the dvd bootable iso from lenovo and nothing. I see the dvd light spin up for a brief few seconds but nothing happens.

I'd piss gasoline on a bonfire to make it work, can't afford another laptop and I need it for school. What was a perfectly well working i5 with 12GB of RAM is now a paperweight and all that happened was a system update that included the newest bios.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The BIOS update changed something in the TPM.
Check if you can still boot into BIOS, by pressing Enter a few times immediately after power-on, then F1.
If you don't use/need TPM, set the Security chip in BIOS to Inactive.

Use another computer to download the latest BIOS here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloa ... 2A449E5144
Burn the .iso to a CD using e.g. ImgBurn (don't just copy it!!), then try to boot/update your T430 from that CD.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for the reply. I tried pressing enter a few times as I turned it on and while it was beeping at me then F1 but no joy. I used the windows 10 built in burning software to burn and close the dvd. it's a T430 2349-nz4

Instructions on the web said you had to press Enter a few times, then get another screen where you press F1.
Apparently after seeing the logo, you press F1 right away to get into BIOS.
With power off, remove your HD/SSD, then try the F1 again.
Replacing your motherboard (with integrated/Intel graphics) can be done following the HMM (see link at top of this page).
For a replacement motherboard, put a WTB (Want To Buy) in our Marketforum, or check eBay and consorts.

Did you try burning the new BIOS on a CD/DVD and install it?

Yeah I burned the newest using winiso. I don't get anything viewable on the screen after pressing enter a few times. Its just blank when the power is off/on.

I do see/hear the dvd spin up and read the dvd, just nothing happens. 5 beeps and ...

Don't press Enter first, hit F1 right away to get into BIOS.
Any difference without HD/SSD?

Does it beep 5x only once, or 5x - pause - 5x ?

I pulled the drive. What a pita it is to take apart a laptop...

It beeps 5x pauses then 5x again.

If you find already that removing just 1 screw is way too much work to get a HD/SSD out, then there isn't much else we can do for you.
