T440s v X240 relative resolutions

#1 Post by kevinc » Sun Jul 27, 2014 8:27 pm

I recently returned an X240 with the touch screen because the high resolution touch screen was uncomfortable for me to use over long periods. I'm now looking for an alternative and can't find many Lenovos to comparison shop.
At native resolution which of these should give me the larger fonts, though I expect the actual difference to be small...

X240 12.5" 1366 x 768 IPS
T440s 14.0 1600 x 900 TN

MacGuyver would know the mathematical formula for that, but I don't.
I'd also appreciate comments re the relative quality of the screens. I know IPS is superior to TN, but several have commented very favorably on the T440s TN screen.
Thanks.

You can use the useful page below to compare DPI of different screens, based on size and resolution:
https://www.sven.de/dpi/

In short, the X240 will have slightly lower DPI (which means, larger fonts). But the resolution itself is too low for many tasks these days.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

Thanks you...very useful for me. To put this in context, I'll be coming off several years with an X31, 12.5 1024 x 768

Another option if you want a good screen would be to get the FHD screen on the T440s and bump the DPI up a little bit to make things bigger. As long as you don't go too high, it works fairly decently, better in Windows 8.1 if you can live with Windows 8.1.

My experience with the FHD touch screen in the X240 was unsatisfactory. I tried it with WIN 7 and it was too small. If I bumped it up to 150% the fonts were OK, I'd lose too much ot the screen and several of my apps wouldn't scale properly. It would be easier of the higher end Lenovos were more available at retail for comparison shopping. Apple makes it so easy.....and no restocking fees.
