Advice about new T550 screen replacement?

Hi everyone, I just bought a T550 but unfortunately ordered it with the standard 768 resolution screen. I'd like to replace the LCD panel with an IPS 1080 or better yet 3K, however since the laptop just came out, there doesn't seem to be much information about what screens can be used. I did find this screen on ebay but it's the only one, so I am wondering if other panels, for example, a T540p panel, are compatible. If anyone could point me towards a compatible 3K display, or even a better 1080 than is in that link I would appreciate it.

Lastly, are there any problems I might anticipate by installing a screen with a different resolution than the original one? Is it just a matter of updating the drivers? If that's the case, it's not really clear to me what exactly I would need to install: drivers on the lenovo site.

There's also this site but I don't know what panel to look for.

You don't need to install any drivers for a display.

Thanks, that clears one thing up at least.

If I can't find any more information I might buy the mystery brand ebay panel and hope it's just a matter of popping the bezel off and screwing it in.

Don't.

For starters, it's not a Lenovo-issued panel, since their FHD screen is not an IPS one.

You can also pass on the second website that you've linked.

Why don't you just return the machine and re-order it with a 3K Panasonic LCD? FHD panel found on these is junk anyway.

The problem is if I cancel the order then re order it, I won't be able to get it for the same (low) price anymore. I already called and tried to change the configuration but it was sent to manufacturing.

As far as it being a non lenovo panel, I figured that would be a good thing since I want IPS? I'm not set on buying that ebay panel but it can't be worse than the screen my laptop will be shipped with and I can't find anything else. So far I've found absolutely no information about compatibility either. I might have to wait until more people get these things since they're still pretty new.

I see.

That screen description seems rather unreal. I'd PM the seller and ask them what LCD *exactly* would I receive if I were to order it from them...manufacturer, model, all nine yards.

Quite a few people have blown their boards with "compatible" screens. Not worth it in my opinion.

Good luck.

Yeah I'd like to avoid frying a new computer, any idea where I can buy lenovo issued panels (or more specifically, a panasonic 3k panel), or where I can find the exact model number of the OEM screens so I could try to find one? I've tried looking and can't find much. I guess it's not looking good at this point. Thanks for the advice.

No idea what those O-fi, Wac, AG etc. mean.

I too am interested in this topic. I ordered a base T550 with the intention of replacing the screen. I received my laptop yesterday, and the screen I am replacing it with is the AUO B156HAN01.2 (which is a very popular screen, high quality). I had actually fitted this screen on a previous T540p.

So, after installing the screen on the T550, everything went seemingly ok....but with one small problem. I cannot adjust the brightness. I have tried everything to alleviate it (updating driver, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, using the Windows Display Adapter, etc.) Nothing worked to restore the ability to adjust the brightness. Even on the screen it would say (Screen brightness unavailable). I reinstalled the original panel and the brightness controls work on it. I'm at a loss, I'm thinking it may be some monitor INF file that is messing it up. I may have to try just doing a clean install and see if that works.

If anyone has any other thoughts it would be greatly appreciated.

Based on RBS list of FRU numbers I am fairly certain an OS reinstall will not help.

Compare your T540p LCD FRU with his list. Your T540p LCD FRU probably does not match.

The FRU of the screen should not matter as they all use the same eDP connector. The AUO screen I used did not have a FRU number and worked perfectly fine on the T540p. However, I am very surprised at the difficulty I am having with the new T550. The screen works in it, is recognized, but just does not give me any brightess controls whatsoever. 300+ nits of brightness at night is killing me....

Hopefully this is just a driver issue that will be later fixed...

Try booting a "live" Linux media and verify whether the brightness control is active in that environment.

Good luck.

I have the exact same problem with a w550s and the LG LP156WF4-SPU1... screen works fine but at MAX brightness and no control... fn keys do not work and windows brightness adjustments do not even appear.
