I've been through 2 different wireless cards, and aside from having to modify my bios, the only other option is to buy one with the Lenovo FRU number. I see a bunch of different ones out there, but I've narrowed it down to two, 04x6007 (from Lenovo) and 04w3806 (from some website in China).

Lenovo can't even tell me definitively tell me whether the one they sell is going to work. They said they only provide support on the ones that come with the laptop. They then tried to tell me that the 04x6008 card would be "faster" even though it is a Wireless-N card. So I am not going to trust anything they say. Is there someone who has a T540p who has used either of these cards and can verify whether or not they work?

I have a T540p and the wireless card has never needed to be replaced. When I bought mine it came with a 3 year warranty so if it had gone wonky then I'd have asked for a free replacement.
How long was your warranty?
