T450s Touchpoint not working after resume from hibernate or sleep

#1 Post by mschaffer » Sat Oct 10, 2015 12:50 pm

My T450s is really beginning to get on my last nerve. Recently, I have been experiencing a problem when resuming from hibernating or sleeping: the Touchpoint does not work. This happens frequently (about 70% of the time). Sometimes (if I do this enough) I can sleep then resume and the Touchpoint will wake up.

I have tried re-installing the latest drivers (Synaptics 18.1.27.20) but nothing has been fixed.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, in general, the Synaptics drivers are terrible. Middle-button scrolling is almost unusable---and that's when it deigns to work at all. This is a real usability issue---and the Touchpoint is one of the main reasons I still use a Thinkpad at all (Lenovo has really undermined or removed most of the other reasons I still put up with the Thinkpad and Lenovo). As I mentioned, I am on my last nerve with Thinkpads and if this is not resolved soon I will be an ex-Thinkpad user.

Which Windows version ? When it happens, go to Device Manager and check the driver whether it has exclamation mark icon. I believe this is software issue. Also check both Application and System Event Log for possible error/warning messages. Synaptics driver also spawns tons of processes  (running in user mode) usually started by Task Scheduler after logon. Check if any of them is missing or crashed.

As a last option, try to downgrade to some older driver version. Latest version does not necessarily mean the best one :(

Oops! I forgot to mention that I am using Win 8.1.
The driver does not have an exclamation mark icon next to it. I have also double checked that the ribbon cable is seated properly.
I had not thought to check the event logs. I will also try a different version of the Synaptics driver. but it may exacerbate other problems that I am already having with the TouchPoint. (refer to this thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T ... -p/2058728). The scrolling in most applications is already awful. However, I may try the X250 driver that wasn't too bad.

I was looking at this thread (below) since the X250 has the same Synaptics UltraNav system as the T450s (or at least I believe it is the same).
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X ... 149#M64578

The X250 driver is version 18.1.27.30 (dated 7/15/2015) versus the current T450s driver 18.1.27.20 (dated 4/3/2015). Since I am having such a time with the Touchpoint, I decided to install it, even though it's not for the T450s.

Well, I must say that the Touchpoint has been working much better. It's still not as good as my older Thinkpads, but it is a TREMENDOUS improvement---especially the scrolling and lack of problems with the resume and hibernate.

I find it to be very curious that Lenovo has not updated the T450s driver since so many people are having problems with the Synaptics Touchpoint. Go figure.

Did you use Lenovo System Update or driver matrix on Lenovo website ?

I usually use the System Update utility to keep drivers up to date, but I did check the Lenovo support website as well:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product ... kpad-t450s
currently shows the mouse and keyboard driver (Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad L450, T450, T450s) as ver. 18.1.27.20 dated 4/2/2015.
I am using the Windows 8.1 (64-bit) filter to select this.

I had somewhat similar problems on an hp laptops, where some touch features do not work after sleep or hibernate, the way around it was to find the synaptics .exe file in task manager, and 'end process', and then dig up the same file in 'program files' folders and run it manually.
