T440 - TouchPad problems W10

The TouchPad control in properties is "greyed out" and in the drop down the only options are "pointer". The right & left click work on the "TouchPad" but nothing else. I tried the most recent driver correctly I believe (first experience W10). I attempted to uninstall, reapply driver etc. but to no avail. I've read multiple similar incidents on various forums regarding the "new style" product but don't actually see the exact problem mentioned and no where have I seen a resolution. Perhaps I've not researched hard enough but it's maybe got me whipped.
I did try a Linux stick and all is well. Amazing how Linux "just works". My older XP machines are now mostly Linux.
I bought this machine with this problem. I did check the BIOS, it was NOT "disabled", I did "disable" it and rebooted the machine and then accessed the BIOS again and "enabled" it but still have the same issue.

I have had lots of problems with the newest graphics and touchpad/trackpoint drivers provided by Windows 10, on at least four of my computers. The solution is to replace these drivers with the ones provided by the computer manufacturers. Install Lenovo's touchpad driver, even if it was written for an older version of Windows. But be careful with one thing: Windows 10 will keep trying to automatically update the driver back to the newest (and problematic) version. Keep reverting to the old (but good) version. Also, right-click on the Start Menu --> System --> Advanced system settings --> Hardware --> Device Installation Settings --> No, let me choose what to do --> Never install driver software from Windows Update. Just keep reverting, and eventually Windows 10 will stop bothering you.
This is the single most annoying "feature" of Windows 10. I hope Microsoft will fix it soon. This is also why I wish people would spend less time complaining about privacy issues, because they are swamping out complaints about REAL issues such as this.

Thank you! I've set the machine aside and I believe it will rest for a couple of days with other chores likely taking some priority. The driver I did install and seems to be "in use" is the most current from Lenovo.
Once the "LET ME CHOOSE" --> NEVER, does that "STICK" or do I need to do that every time I might want to add/delete or whatever?
There seems to be no W7 from previous to revert back to and there were no restore points either to "go back" beyond to see if that would correct it either. If a person wanted to do a "clean install" of W10 since this is activated properly etc. how does one do it?

Click on "Update driver software", then "Browse my computer..." and "Let me pick...". There, you may see multiple drivers with different dates. Pick one of the older ones and see what happens.

It will stick, but somehow it doesn't completely prevent Windows 10 from automatically updating your drivers. Windows 10 only becomes slightly less zealous about updating drivers.

You have brought up one of the nicest features of Windows 10: Once it has been activated successfully, you can clean install as many times as you want, either by using a setup disc/drive, or by resetting through the Start Menu (Settings --> Update & security -->Recovery --> Reset this PC). After each clean install, as soon as you connect to the internet, it will be automatically activated again, because Microsoft remembers that this computer is eligible for the free Windows 10 upgrade. I have done this quite a few times already on my computers.

Well this turned out to be an interesting ordeal. I did a RESET and that was as mentioned (deleted ALL and a fresh start) BUT I still ended with a touchpad that couldn't be accessed. The Lenovo driver matched the W10 driver but in the device manager it just looked "odd" mentioning PS2 mouse. I went to the Synaptics Drivers page and took a chance on the "generic" that even Synaptic says NOT to use with PC BUILDER device and it removed the PS2 device and added an SMBus TouchPad. All works now and I haven't been back to the Lenovo drivers page to look for other options (went back and there was only one choice for my T440, 20B7). I let the Lenovo Bridge "detect the machine".
Doing the RESTORE it mentions using your W8/8.1 apps disc to add apps that were supplied with the PC. I've got 4 W8/8.1 discs and 3 W7 discs BUT I have a "clean install" of W10 with no "bloatware" so I wonder if there's maybe an easy way to only get what I'd like from the RECOVERY MEDIA. I don't know what I'd want for sure. Anyone with any idea what might be worthwhile APPS that would have been included?
I did the suggested NEVER > LET ME CHOOSE for hardware drivers.
