T440 - COA for W8 or W7 for W10 'ACTIVATION'

#1 Post by WVZR1 » Tue Nov 17, 2015 11:00 pm

I purchased my T440 with W10 already installed and after sorting out a few small issues all WAS well. W10 had been 'restored' at least once and the when the UPDATES hit Monday for 1511 W10 PRO mine won't/didn't activate. I've an 0x8007232b error and I read that it's maybe possible to use the W7 or W8 COA and change the product and MS will just go ahead and activate it.

That presents it's own problem, my machine doesn't have a COA for either W7 or W8 under the battery. Mine was a machine sold with W7 downgrade originally and I have Lenovo restore media for BOTH supplied by Lenovo in a single mailing but I'd like to avoid the build with those and just leave the W10 intact as is. I'd like a W8 COA snapshot to try the 'rumored' W7/W8 COA will activate W10 PRO in this last update.

Anyone care to share a 'snapshot'? I checked eBay but none of the COA's would ZOOM to the point of being legible.

I'd be certainly willing to listen to alternatives if there is one to ACTIVATE this W10 with the error I mentioned.

Thanks
-Dave

Never tried this but it looks like this might work for you.

I've used NeoSmart's key finder under Windows 8.1 to nab a key from a Windows 8 machine.

Theoretically with 1511/10586.3 you can use the command prompt to recover the old COA but this did NOT work for mine and a MS Tech spent 40+ minutes and they finally just provided a new PRODUCT CODE for the machine. From a command prompt run as admin this after you've got 1511 should recover your old key. I recovered the COA but it would NOT activate W10 PRO. After activating with the NEW PRODUCT CODE the tool still recovers the OLD>

wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Theoretically 1511 was to accommodate this feature, allowing the use of W7 & W8 COA product to activate the appropriate W10 product.
